Rossall's rent is council rent which is government subsidized. You'd probably pay double that for a private rent of a similar quality.

Rental prices in the UK are crazy. It sounds like the Arkansas is better in this respect at least.

Around here the average rent for a private one bedroomed flat is about £500 PCM which isn't much different to this council flat. At the moment though I'm paying about £350 PCM.

Well the rent might be relatively better, but tenants have almost no legal rights at all. It's a right-wing state and it shows.

My mortgage used to be £200 per month. I paid it off in 2004. Ever since then I've seen anything over £200 per month as daylight robbery. Didn't have anything to do with renting till I got to the USA. It was quite a shock to see what had happened to housing costs. So much for the value of a commodity being the labour cost of creating it. Somebody's getting an unearned income, and it's not me.

What pisses me off is that I've paid about £200,000 in rent since I left home at 19. Never missed a payment one way or another.

If someone would have lent me £150,000 back then, I'd have been able to buy a pretty decent house with it and I'd have paid it off by now. And that house would probably be worth closer to £500,000 today. But I've never earned enough to save a deposit or get a mortgage.

As it is I've put £200,000 in landlords pockets and I'm still renting. The system sucks. I can't think about that too long. Makes me angry.

The world has been getting worse since the 60s. I was there so I know. Some stuff has got better, but that's mostly science inventions like computers, cancer treatment and digital music players. But ordinary folks can't afford 2 of those 3 things so they might as well not exist unless you're a toff.
