I nearly drowned in a swimming pool too, just before my 10th birthday. I went swimming as a birthday treat, with my cousins. But because of my lack of confidence in swimming, I could only stay in the swallow pools, while my cousins kept wanting to go in the deep pool. I felt lonely just stuck in the shallow pools on my own, so I put my armbands on and went into the deep pool. Wearing armbands in deep water made me feel so much more confident and I could swim really well without my head going under, so it was a win-win. But someone told me I wasn't allowed in the deep pool with armbands on, but I didn't want to be left out, so I took the armbands off and one of my cousins said she'll help hold me up. But I clung on to her for dear life, and we both fell under. Once I was under, I tried swimming upwards but I couldn't, and I became disoriented and didn't know which direction I was facing and just couldn't find my way up to the top of the water.
Then, just as I was beginning to accept that I was going to die down there, I felt myself being pulled out by a man. My cousin had apparently tapped him on the shoulder begging him to help, as she was the same size as me so wasn't strong enough to pull me up. Then the lifeguard came to make sure I was all right. I was, but just a bit shaken up. I remained in the baby pool after that, entertaining my 2-year-old cousin.
But none of that would have happened if I was just allowed in the deep pool with armbands on. I think they should change the rule to "all non-confident swimmers must wear armbands in the deep pool", just so that we don't feel left out. Armbands work wonders and if they're properly inspected before use then there's very little chance they'll suddenly deflate.
