Probably about 36 hours.

Have you since read The Idiot?

Not at this current time...

Have you ever noticed any strange weather?

Strange weather? Yes. I've seen rather violent storms, but I've never been in or near a tornado or a hurricane.

I have not read The Idiot. I've read Crime and Punishment and thought it was great. I also have a collector's copy of The Brothers Karamazov. It's a large hardbound copy that comes with it's own cardboard case and artwork prints by Fritz Eichenberg as illustrations. I started Brothers but got sidetracked and it's still on my bookshelf....

If someone loaned you a book, you'd make a point of returning it, wouldn't you?

I very rarely borrow books. I use a library or buy my own copies; however, yes of course I would return it! I recall loaning a book to someone about 20 years ago and then they denied ever taking it. I remember how sad I felt.

Absolutely I would make a point of being conscious of having a someone's possession in my care until I returned it to them. I would feel under obligation to do so. As a matter of fact, in the rare occasions when someone has loaned something to me, I've felt a sense or relief after I've returned it to them.

Are you nearsighted, farsighted?

Both? I have good vision.

Which do you like better, daytime or nighttime?

Nighttime. Although I do like taking my routine walk during the day.

What is your favorite color?

I am extremely farsighted. I can't find my hand in front of my face without my glasses. I also experience diplopia (double vision) from my stroke so when that is happening I need to wear my uber-nerdy prism glasses.

I avoid daytime and stay awake all night almost every day.

Favourite colours: charcoal grey, violet. I also have a thing for brick red (used to be called "Indian Red", but I'm sure the name has changed). It's reddish brown and earthy.

Blue. Most any shade of blue. No question.

I'm nearsighted. I've at times thought about the idea of getting laser surgery but with my luck, the surgery would be botched and I'd have permanent eye damage. I worked with a woman, a nurse, years ago who had laser surgery on her eyes and for some reason she felt like she had a piece of sand under her eyelid every time she blinked. I don't know if that ever went away for her or not. That was enough for me to decide not to do it. I do have bifocals but when I read I prefer to remove my glasses and hold the book about 12 inches from my eyes.

What's more jarring to you, bright lights or loud sounds?

Bright lights, definitely. Loud sounds I can adapt because I like loud music.

I'm sorry about that lady's eye issue. Sounds awful. I doubt I'd do laser either! 8O

Also, the violets that I like are more blue than purple :)

Did you know your name is blue? (synaesthesia).

Very cool.

For me it's loud sounds over bright lights. I picked the name Magna for being a word form in Latin for "loud". The world can be a noisy place!

Have you known anyone who needed hearing aids?

My brother, and my mother's best friend! Also, I'm supposed to have hearing aids for my tinnitus / hyperacausis (the pitch-equalising types or maskers, I think? Or maybe there is a range I don't hear? ) but I never got around to it because they seem uncomfortable and awkward, and I'm afraid they'll just make life louder.

I hope Magna isn't upset with me for stealing a book when I was 11----I did bring it back the next day, and was punished commensurately :P

My father had hearing aids for a couple of years before he passed.

Same question.

Not upset in the least. It wasn't my book you swiped!

My grandfather had hearing aids. He was in WWII as an artilleryman. Even with hearing aids, you had to be next to his ear and shout very loudly for him to hear you. As kids, we didn't think anything of having to do that. That was just something about grandpa. He had the most wonderfully full laugh.

What is more uncomfortable to you, being too hot or too cold?

I'd rather be intensely hot than intensely cold. Otherwise, I'd rather be moderately cold than moderately hot.

Same question.

Interesting distinction, Korts!
I never know how to answer that question about hot / cold. I have very poor body-temperature regulation and I'm nearly always hot or cold, or combinations thereof! Sometimes my left side is frozen even to the touch and my right side is sweating! I've been known to ride in cars with the seat heater and the AC going simultaneously. I use an electric heat pad or hot water bottle with a fan blowing! I think some of this is stroke related. I think I'd die in either extreme. I have a fear of freezing (hypothermia) but I go batty in extreme heat.

Your grandfather sounds marvellous, Magna! All of my great grandfathers and great uncles were in WW1 as engineers (primarily laying railways and building bridges). Some also fought front line.

Who would like to go to the cinema tonight? I'm up for popcorn.
