Isabella. When I was diagnosed with hyperacusis, the audiologist suggested those masking devices for my tinnitus. I decided against them for similar reasons to you and also for the outrageous cost. I've learned to live with the ringing since I've had it all my life.

Regarding the cinema, can I bring earplugs? I envision going to the cinema with you and Kortie would be delightful. Kortie, you'd have to keep your urge to howl at bay for the duration of the film....

Was there any food item you hated as a child but were forced to eat?

I take earplugs with me everywhere I go, although I don't always use them!
Yes! Let's go to the theatre! I'll drive! (I wish!)
BUTTERMILK -- omg. My auntie babysat us for a week and forced me to drink it and I've been traumatised ever since.
I just told this to a friend the other day!
My parents didn't really force me to eat anything I didn't want to.

Also, new question. If you've seen The Breakfast Club, which character do you relate to the most?

My grandmother drank buttermilk everyday (the wife of my grandfather I just spoke of). She was adorable as well. If you told her something surprising, she'd exclaim: "Oh, my lands!". I can still see her saying it. Such a wonderful person.

My mother was a dietitian so she was always making different kinds of food, lots of different kinds of soups, etc. I was never forced to eat things either but I think her cooking so many different foods was directly related to me being rather adventurous with food.

Do you eat fast food?

Very rarely, but I do like McDonald's french fries!
I'm more likely to have thai take-away than fast food, but I'm not against it per se.

Your grandmother sounds like a doll. I'll excuse her buttermilkian transgression! (Oh my lands!)
May she and your grandfather rest in peace (your mother as well) :(

Re: Breakfast Club. I dress more like Claire (I think that was her name? Molly?) but I feel more like the Ally Sheedy character because I'm nearly mute and quite reserved. People can't quite figure out what to make of that combination sometimes.

Have you ever seen St. Elmo's Fire? (The film?) I remember liking it but haven't seen it in 30 + years. I really liked the theme song which was instrumental music.

Thank you for those kind words about my grandparents and my Mom, Isabella.

Breakfast Club. Such a great movie. I actually watched it again by myself about a month ago. I would definitely be a cross between Bender and Allison. I loathed high school and the institutional aspect of it. In high school I looked like none of the characters since I dressed punk/new wave.

I can't think of a John Hughes movie I don't like offhand.

Have you seen Uncle Buck?

I have a thing for Belushi and John Candy. Big guys who are vulnerable :( , rather like my father. (Here I go again ... lol). I did see Uncle Buck but again it was way back in the 80s so I don't recall it much. Planes Trains and Automobiles is so upsetting to me that I can barely watch it. (Del Griffith, RIP). :( :( :(

Which are Bender and Allison btw? Is that the first guy in the photo and the Ally Sheedy girl?
I'll have to brush up on those characters!

Yes, John Hughes was great. I don't know if I ever saw Pretty in Pink though, strangely. What was the one with the guy outside the girl's window playing music? I think it was the Bender character. I loved that one!

St. Elmo's Fire? Yes? No? I posted the song.

I don't recall seeing St. Elmo's fire actually. I think I will now though.

Pretty in Pink. I liked the movie. I liked Molly Ringwald a lot back then.

Bender is the Judd Nelson character and Allison is the Ally Sheedy character. I'm similar to her in that in a group especially of people I don't know, I will usually just observe people and try to sort out the goings on around me.

We just watched Planes, Trains within the last month and our kids saw it for the first time. I agree with you that there are some Del scenes that are very sad. At the end of the movie I want Neil and his family to take Del in and have him live with them.

Do you like It's a Wonderful Life?

I'm very Ally Sheedy in my personality but I don't look the stereotypical part that she does. Del broke my heart -- omg he's just so fragile. Steve Martin's wife's loving smile when they arrive was imprinted on me. I wanted to be that type of loving partner for someone.

Wonderful Life? Yes of course! Same thing with Mary Hatch and her smile at George at the prom. Ethereal. Such a beautiful film. I watch it every year.

Yes, check out St. Elmo if you can.

What was the one with Judd Nelson on the street? I think it was called Say Anything?

Question: Ferris Bueller. Discuss. :!:

Do you mean the character serenading by holding the boombox over his head with the Peter Gabriel song "In Your Eyes" playing from it? That's Say Anything with John Cusack and the female lead in that movie was Ione Skye, the daughter of the singer Donovan.

We watch It's a Wonderful Life yearly as well. I'm not completely sure why, but I can only partially hold back tears and my throat feels like I've swallowed a bowling ball at the scene in Mary's house when the she was on the phone and George was so close to her and said: "Now you listen to me!" and then they embrace. It's so intense for me.

Ferris Bueller. Loved it when it was out.

Wonderful Life: I agree about the telephone scene, and also when Mary roasts the turkey with the record player contraption!

Thank you for the name John Cusack! Yes, that's it!

I had a Ferris poster that said "Leisure Rules" in my Uni dorm. It was him in his tiger vest on a couch. :)
I really liked Cameron and would have dated him in a heartbeat.

Cosby Show. Discuss. 8)

I didn't watch the Cosby Show much. I did watch Family Ties (I appreciated the Alex P. Keaton character), The Facts of Life, Diff'rent Strokes, The Jeffersons, Good Times, Three's Company.

It's a divine day in the low 60's. Probably the last of it's kind for awhile. I'm off for my walk and will return....

What other movies, if any, do you find to be sad?

Enjoy your walk. My grandparents lived next door to the blonde girl from Family Ties for a little while, but I wasn't in California then and didn't see that house.

Sad movies:
PENNY SERENADE (Cary Grant and Irene Dunne -- omg -- sob warning)
Mrs. Doubtfire (I sobbed)
Dead Poets (say no more)
Patch Adams (dying)
The opening scenes of Saving Private Ryan (I couldn't watch any more)
Schindler's List (   )
Stella (Bette Midler -- something kills me)
Lion King
Sally Field's grief scene from Steel Magnolias

I almost forgot The Wife! (Glenn Close): I almost fell off my seat in anguish. It was that powerful for me.

I will think of more. I don't watch a lot of movies so it will take me a moment.

Irene Dunne is my favorite actress from older movies. Katherine Hepburn had spunk but Irene Dunne had a subtle wit that I really like. The Awful Truth, My Favorite Wife, I Remember Mama. I'm going to see if I can watch Penny Serenade.

I guess it's hard for me to remember sad films too.

Terms of Endearment. I don't think I'll be watching that one again. Once you've lived watching a loved one die of cancer (Mom) it hits a bit too close to home. Maybe someday.

Did you like the Muppets?

Oh, yes. Puppets/Muppets are so easy to look at and watch. I was captivated by them as a child whereas people....not so much.

When was the last time you were elated?
