Actually, lakes are far more likely to ensnare/entangle a person and cause them to not be able to resurface and drown.
This is because lakes are mostly stagnant water, while oceans have rapidly moving and destructive mineral water. The ocean water breaks things down much more rapidly, hence the sand all over the place. Lakes often have muddy bottoms and old trees and such under the surface, lasting for years with nothing to quickly grind them down.
