A stick is much better if you are going off road, in my opinion. Also, towing would be easier because you could keep it in a lower gear for more power.

My dad would disagree. He doesn't tow but he got a truck with a high towing capacity & added extra shocks & things because he works in construction so his truck is very loaded down with heavy tools & some of the jobs he drives on have yards with lots of sand, mud, hols & the like. He's driven sticks before but he would never get a manual.

One issue with a manual and offroad capability, is, besides control issues, an auto will generally break faster. Manual transmissions just tend to last longer and be built for more heavy duty use, thus why you'd want it in an offroad vehicle 9 times out of 10.

I don't know, I enjoy a manual more for everything except driving in heavy traffic/overloaded with lots of people in the car.

Also, a lot of older people don't like manuals because their legs/back/etc hurt from using the clutch pedal. That's the way it is with my parents.

I don't really care, I like driving an automatic more then a manual.

I used to go four-wheel driving occasionally in a 90s model Toyota Land Cruiser. Those are supposed to be one of the best off-road SUVs in the world, and they've only been available with an automatic transmission for many years.

There is a paradox here but I'm not sure which one it is.

I put that there because of that jerk who stole the Autism Social Rule Book thread and attempted to publish it with herself listed as editor. She had already arranged for this when she posted to notify the foroum. She didn't get permission from Alex or anyone who had posted in that thread, although she lied at first and said she had permission from him, and she was trying to decide what she was going to do with the profits, and she was going to give everyone who posted in the thread a free ecopy of the book. Oh how generous! </sarcasm>

Anyway, even though I didn't post in that thread, I was furious with her attempted theft, and so I put that as my signature line just in case some other jacka** gets the idea to steal from the forum and publish it under their own name without asking permission. That way if I ever run across it in any published material, I can sue the pants off them.

She claimed to be an author and editor already, and recently self diagnosed, yet as an author and editor she apparantly didn't know that she needed permission from the actual writers of the material before publishing it, and also that most publishers consider material from forums or webpages to be previously published material. I simply think she was looking around on the internet for something to make a quick buck with and found that, joined to attempt to fit in and gain trust, arranged for publication, then posted that information in a way that we would feel honored that she did it, and obviously too stupid or naive to know that she was screwing us over.

Anyway, that's why that signature line is there. There was a thief among us and I don't know if she's still a member. The thread she stole has been moved to the moderators forum for the time being, as has her original thread about her publishing it. Her backhanded "apology" thread is still there as is an explination in the WP.net discussion forum, if you would like a link to them.

Sorry - I didn't mean to be rude ... paradoxes are one of my more peculiar interests :-)

According to wiki, they're offered with manuals up through this current gen, however in USA, this current gen is only offered with an auto.

You weren't being rude at all. I'm happy to explain why I have it there. Someone PM'd me recently to "object" to it in a friendly way, and I explained there as well.

I was furious over what happened about that thread, even though I never posted in it. I'm still mad over it, so I'll probably keep the sig line until my mad goes away. :-)

There was an interesting study done last year on atheism; the comments from the PPR section where used for research in that study. While I'm sure that the author of that study asked for permission from the owner of the site, permission from members isn't required per the terms of service. In fact per those rules individuals that post here, actually have to ask permission from the owner to republish their own comments, per the terms of service linked at the bottom of the page.

I was lucky, I had a Chevrolet Cavalier. It had a shift indicator that lit up on the dashboard. Can't remember seeing another vehicle like that. :) I stayed with automatic after that, except for a government vehicle that was issued to me. Hard to come across a standard shift these days, it seems like. Cell phones and texting rule now.

Sorry for derailing the thread but...I prefer automatics :P. Starting them uphill is way easier than a stick-drive, and living in a city with loads of hills, sort of like San Francisco, that's a big asset.

Yes, I know I can. It's either pushing the clutch to that sweet spot where the engine doesnt shut down, but doesn't let the car go back either, then accelerating while letting go of the clutch, Or just switching from the brakes to the accelerator really fast and then letting go of the clutch.

Or quite simply, accelerating with an automatic and not worrying about anything else.

Driving automatic isn't really driving that's why, It's the same as riding a really heavy mobility scooter IMO.

Isn't driving getting from point A to point B using an automobile?

I'm in the UK, and I don't know anybody or know of anybody who drives an automatic. My Mum had an automatic for a while in 1988, it was a works car. So yes, I was last in an automatic 24 years ago. (Except when I visited the US, that is).
