"Felcher"

Don't look it up if you're squeamish. "All In The Family" featured a character called "Reverend Felcher", who was played by an actor named "Will B. Able".

I almost don't want to find out, but I don't get it.

Well of course. You're an American as am I. It took me a while to find out too. "a***hole coaches". Here in America the word is "as*hole".

You have to keep in mind that this site is majority American.

But yes: In the UK you wisely have the seperate word "arse" for "the posterior of the human anatomy, or the orafice there in" to avoid confusion. We Americans use the word "ass" for both that, and for other unoffensive meaning: "donkey" which causes endless confusion.

In fact I recently had a conversation about it here on WP.

Someone posted a sentence that contained the epithet "jackass", but they cenorsed it thus:"jack***". Almost fell off my chair laughing at the unnecessary censorship! Had to explain to this fellow American person that "when you put 'jack' in front of 'ass' it makes the word mean 'male donkey', so you don't need to censor it!".

"jackass" which means "male donkey" does get censored much like "b***h" which means "female dog" gets censored.

WHERE have you seen it censored?

My parents would NEVER used swear words, but talked about "jackasses" all of the time at the dinner table. In fact thats part of why I think of the term "jackass" as the opposite of offensive (to me the term as about as innocent, quaint, and old fashioned, as you can get).

And Victorian era politicians (like Lincoln and Douglas, and Disreali, and Gladstone) would use the words "ass", and "jackass" in public discourse all of the time, without a second thought from them or their audience.

So, I am sorry, but I just don't believe you when you say that "jackass" gets censored.

Dogs have a certain association with promiscuity that donkeys dont have(whether its deserved or not).Donkeys are just thought of as being innocently stupid. So the word "b***h" in AngloAmerican culture is much more profane a word than jackass.

My parents considered anything with the word A$$ including jack@ss a swear word & it was equally as bad as most other curse words.

Really?

Why did they think that?

"Zebra" isn't considered a swear word. Niether is donkey. So why "jackass"?

And b***h gets censored by the software of WP right here. But not jackass.

Because it contained the word A$$ & is an insult.

I have no idea how the creators of Rugrats got away with naming a character "Dr. Lipschitz". 8O
I know "kids" cartoons in the 90's pushed a lot past the radar, but still!

Maybe because it is a real last name.

I'd rather not have the name Dick Army

Its a common German (especially German-Jewish) surname.

English has so much slang that half of the names in the phone book have raunchy double meanings.
