One more question how does anyone cope with dreads if they get nits?
Like could you imagine combing one of these through them

No way man! Some actors do their own stunts; Johnny does his own hair, a trend he pioneered in Edward Sissorhands, for which he spent three years preparing his hair. I recently read an interview with him that described how he spent five years growing his hair out and then getting it dreaded up in preparation for the PotC run. Afterwards, he had about half of it cut off and un-dreaded, and re-shaped into the freakish long hair he had in Sweeny Todd, which is actually how he looks in real life today. He's so hard core he doesn't even believe in hair dye; in order to get that streak of grey, he actually stabbed himself in the scalp with a hot soldering iron to traumatize the hair follicles in that spot and make them go grey. 8O Just keep an eye out for SilverProteus's avatar to see his real life hair. And, I happen to know that he actually can weave rope out of the hair on his own back - the man is amazing!

And who knows where he's going to take things next... Johnny Depp is a true pioneer in the realm of hairstyle method acting. I s**t you not. :!:

Good fortune,

- Icarus wears a fake beard...

you can either cut dreads off or dunk your head in a mix of rubbing alcohol and vinegar.

No Disrespect intended to those of you who have dreadlocks-but I honestly do not find them attractive.
In fact, I think they look rather ugly-even if they arent as dirty and filthy as they appear. I guess I prefer to see
smooth, shiny hair on women and even men.

 Awww. I don't get a choice about having a traditional haircut, or normal colored hair, if I want my good paycheck. Can't you make some exceptions for those of us with normal hair? :afro:

The only dreadlocks I like are those that are found on the Predator.

"GET TO DA CHOPPAH!"

I know I'm a little late but I've loved dreadlocks for the longest time. I've had my current set for around 10 months now. :)
They are sorta orangey-red now, but I am contemplating going darker and more purple sometime soon. Or pinkish? I still can't decide. lol

Dreadlocks are cute, but I hear they take a lot of time, and possibly money to manage.

Yes, you do have to have a good amount of patience to get through the awkward stages but that's all part of the fun I guess, at least for me. 8-9 months is usually the time when they start looking decent, sometimes up to a year and even then they aren't considered mature yet. For me, I have the time and I have no commitments to a job or school so I figured why not take advantage of it and do something neat.

They are very much like a tree, or more specifically a bonsai. You nurture them and give them what they need to grow. You fiddle to much with them and it hinders their progress. Same with a bonsai, you go cutting off too many branches and fussing and you ruin the tree.

You can put as much or as little time into them as you want. The only extra thing I have gotten that cost any money and was specifically for them was a teeny tiny crochet hook. Everything else is pretty much what I would be using anyway. I keep them clean. I separate them occasionally to keep them from growing together. I sew or crochet in loose hair every once in awhile. That's it.

Sorry- dread's always appear messy, unkempt and dirty. I don't like them on anyone. Just seems like another excuse not to care about appearance. And let's face it, no one with dread's ever got a job beyond working in a mall or similar low-level employment. Ever see a doctor or lawyer with dread's? How about a restaurant manager? I haven't. And if I did, I'd walk out.
