On a Samsung phone, diacritics can be added to letters by holding the relevant key down until a menu with available options comes up. This is quite handy when you're typing in a language that isn't available in the list of language keyboards on the phone.

Unfortunately there's a problem when it comes to Māori, which uses macrons with vowels (like the 'ā' in Māori). Not all the macronned vowels in Māori seem to be available – ā, ē, ī and ū are present on the standard English keyboard, but not ō. There are other languages that use macrons, but not all the ones used in Māori.

It also doesn't help that Samsung doesn't have a Māori (or Hawaiian) keyboard. And the one free Māori keyboard I found on Google Play won't download onto my phone for some strange reason. Hopefully Samsung will add one in the future; for now I'll use the macronned letters they have, and an umlauted-o (ö) in lieu of 'ō'.
