God dammit, I said ENTIRELY in the Southern Hemisphere. Small sections of Brazil are thoroughly North of the Equator. Haha, sorry, you just pissed off my inner geographer.

Eh... I thought Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, and Sao Paulo were at the South (strictly speaking, in the middle part). LOL

Well, since I have no close pals, I'll have to answer your question hypothetically.
I'd fumble around with trying to be "there" for the person, and make misguided attempts at "helping" them get ready for the trip. Then I'd probably unintentionally ignore them, and then just before they leave, I might work past the anxiety and actually see them. Or just call or email them. I'm not very good at maintaining friendships, which is why I have no close pals.
