Can a wizard be a woman
A few years ago I went to a tourist attraction, and the female bathrooms there were signed as "witches" and the male bathrooms were signed as "wizards". So that made me think that the male equivalent of witches are wizards.
Maybe they should have named it "vampires" instead, as that seems more like a male version of witches.
I had the same thought, Tamaya. Witches - female. Wizard - male. But it just dawned on me was warlocks are the male equivalent of the female witches. Witches and warlocks defined for me originally by the television show,
Bewitched.
I agree with Lost_dragon's comment relating witches to nature. In my mind, I'm further defining the differences between witches/warlocks and wizards.
warlock /wôr′lŏk″/
noun1. A man claiming or popularly believed to practice sorcery or witchcraft.
2. A male witch; a wizard; a sprite; an imp.
Similar: wizard. sprite. imp
3. The male equivalent of witch.
Gandalf is a wizard. Is he ever referred to as a warlock?
Vampires are unisex, like UncannyDanny said.
The brain is flapping around up there thinking about this. But I planned on going to the the grocery store, first one, then MAYBE bagels from the bagel shop, then the other grocery store. I'm partial to garlic bagels and it has been years since I bought any (pandemic days). Why to do I say my brain is flapping around? Because it just thought "We need a glossary thread the defines all the supernatural terms."
One thing that comes to mind is the parallel between terms like actor/actress, and witch/warlock. For much of my life I associated actress with female and actor with male, but anymore actor can refer to male or female. Perhaps witch is unisex as well? I have heard of men being referred to as witches.
Here is the rub, for me personally. All of my perceptions are from literature and (mostly) media like films. Imagine my teenage surprise when I learned -

Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night, may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright.
was a totally fabricated poem by the writer of
The Wolfman, Curt Siodmak. In other words, my knowledge is not of the academic nature. Does magic exist? <insert quote about science and magic> My knowledge is pop culture based. There may or may not be magic, but there are witches, warlocks, and wizards.
I'm cutting this off here because otherwise, instead of going to the grocery store at 8:00am (too late for that as it is 8:39), I don't want to keep Columbo Writing
1 until it is 2:00pm.
One more thing, because I like looking up "official" definitions... (the quotes around "official" is not meant to suggest there is some conspiracy surrounding the words. I think of them as formal and informal definitions.
witch /wĭch/
noun1. A person, especially a woman, claiming or popularly believed to possess magical powers and practice sorcery.
2. A believer or follower of Wicca; a Wiccan.
3. An old woman considered to be ugly or frightening.
1 Columbo Writing - when the mind says "Oh, one more thing."
