It's hard for me to tell a blatant lie just by itself. I'm too honest for that. Instead, what I like to do is tell a blatant lie, then follow it up by taking some ideas that maybe have a small grain of truth in them and twist them to support the lie I just told. Thus:

The witch hunts of the middle ages were a good thing.

1. They helped bring communities closer together by uniting them against a common enemy. It doesn't matter if that enemy is real or imagined.

2. By providing simple answers to questions such as where plagues came from, they bypassed the need for scientific inquiry that could potentially be destabilizing for society.

3. They provided the males of the clergy with sadistic sexual thrills when they got to watch a suspected female (or male) witch get stripped down and subjected to all manner of imaginative tortures.

4. They provided a much-needed release valve for the anger and frustration that can build up in any community over time.

5. In the age before television and the internet, public witch burnings provided an important diversion from the toil and tedium of medieval life.
