Sticks and stones may break my bones... but names will really hurt my feelings.
If you get a bad bruise, it's sore and tender for quite some time even after it's been inflicted. When someone says something cruel and nasty to me for no good reason, it's like that. Only worse. Bruises eventually heal.
If someone calls me autistic, I don't take that as an insult even if they meant it to be, especially since they probably think "person with autism" is the so-called acceptable term. But when they call me nasty things that aren't true, then they might well be throwing acid in my face.
