^^^This is the first I hear that "what" is rude. I say that in the hope of mitigating some of your distress when people say it. Although I have to admit, if somebody asked me to say "excuse me" I would but I wonder if I would remember. Up here, "excuse me" is for bumping into people, that sort of thing. But that's just here, I'm not saying it should be that way there.
