It's from Job 14 - "Man that is born of Woman":
14.2 Quasi flos egreditur et conteritur et fugit velut umbra et numquam in eodem statu permanet.

He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.
Or:
He springs up like a flower and withers away; like a fleeting shadow, he does not endure.

Commonly used in burial services; said at the graveside before/while lowering the deceased into the grave.

Homo natus de muliere, brevi vivens tempore, repletur multis miseriis.
Quasi flos egreditur et conteritur, et fugit velut umbra,
et numquam in eodem statu permanet.

^^^^Thank you,I thought it would be something sad,the Golden Toad is now believed to be extinct.A victim of the fungus that is killing amphibians at an unprecadated rate.I posted a poem about the toad on the PPR poem thread.I try not to read the poem that often,it makes me depressed.

Ah - that makes sense with the gold crown and fungus on the log in the background.

I thought the image of a toad wearing a crown with that quote plus decaying log might have been a dig, an allegorical reference to the presumptuousness of mankind thinking it itself king over everything.
Is the image contemporary, or from an old painting?

Even if old and allegorical it still works for the Golden Toad and yeah, likewise; the continuing trampling of other life on Earth always makes depressing reading.

I'm guessing contemporary, the toad went extinct fairly recently.I should have paid more attention,I was just doing a random google search for art with toads and found it.
There are lots of images old and new with toads and frogs wearing crowns,I always supposed it was linked to fairy tales about frogs being a prince.
Amphibians are the modern equivalent to the canary in the coal mine, people should be concerned about the sudden extinctions.

The frog/prince fairy tale is probably more to do with finding love etc; this image seems too dark for that: figuratively and literally.

I found it, though - it's contemporary, and I'd say we were both right about the meaning.
The artist (Madeline von Foerster) also deliberately paints in a manner suggestive of earlier styles.

Edited to add a link to the artist's web page, featuring this work:

We should love the stuff around us more. The sad ending to our fairy tale,we never appreciated the little things.
Thank you for identifying the artist.

-finds a generic picture of corn dogs-

Image

I went to a restaurant a week ago and they had corn dogs. They don't tend to sell them here in the UK, so I obviously tried them. They were amazing, so I ordered some yellow corn meal online to make my own, now I'm obsessed with corn dogs.

I also have a thing for the colour red and yellow when they are mixed in a swirl or in the same area, so I picked the above picture with ketchup and mustard covered corn dogs :D
