A: Yep.
B: But the dent is so small! How do we tell if it's concave up or concave down?
A: Take the second derivative and see if it's positive or negative.

It's VERY easy once you learn about it. It's just knowing the relationship between different rates of change and what that looks like on a graph.
For example, velocity is the rate of change of position, and acceleration is the rate of change of velocity, and so on.
