Or maybe it's because of the associations we make with sounds and letters. "Grey" looks more resigned and depressed than "gray" because of the shape of your mouth when you pronounce a short "e" vs. when you pronounce a long "a". It takes less effort to pronounce a short "e" as in "grey", so we automatically associate that lack of effort with the hopeless color of grey/gray.Hmm.. interesting point.
