Socially, it was hard. I moved away from home and didn't know anyone. I was assaulted during orientation and too afraid to tell anyone. I thought my parents would make me quit school and there was no information about SA at the time. My dormitory roommate and I tolerated the year together. I thought she liked me but I found out at the end of the year she didn't. I was very lonely and homesick. I ended up making friends with a very small group and living offcampus in a house, but one of those women turned on me as well. I moved yet again and stayed in the new location through grad school. Academically, I had a lot of anxiety about exams. Papers were OK but I was terrified of exams and being caught off guard by questions, although I always earned high grades. I didn't join any clubs or any extracurriculars. I enjoyed grad school much more than undergrad. I've taken classes since graduation and they're enriching too.

I didn't know I was autistic and I had no accommodations at all. This was also in the 80s when we needed to type all papers by hand, and if we made one spelling error we had to rewrite the entire page. All research had to be conducted in person in the library, because there was no internet. I spent hours copying and citing passages from books, by hand. It was labour intensive and it forced people to be physically present in libraries or lecture theatres, which was really hard on me. I prefer to stay in the comfort of home and avoid people.

It took me FOUR extra years---because I was working full-time. I think I took 9 credits a semester once or twice throughout my time in college. I majored in speech pathology and English. Yes....the dreaded HASS degree.

I was in between two eras. At the start, I had to do what Isabella did. By the time I graduated, I could get articles easily from the Internet.

How often do you give a cacti water?

Another problem is that typewriters were noisy. My housemates had a rule that we couldn't type after a certain time at night, so we didn't keep one another awake. That was a pain because I could never do an all-nighter as needed. Sometimes I ran out of typewriter ribbon, too.

Argggh --- bad times.

We didn't even have internet for searching books in the library. It was all card catalogues and searching by hand.

I don't have any cacti but I water my succulents every Saturday.

When I started using WORD for my papers, I longed for my faithful IBM Selectric with the "correct-o-tape."

Ever rent a typewriter? (I did, in 1986).

No, but I remember my father renting a typewriter and a photocopier back in the 80s when he started his own business. He'd work from home and I'd do the photocopying for him. I liked the smell of the photocopier carbon.

Do you enjoy the smells of any particular technology?

No I didn't rent a typewriter.

I didn't use Word until I was working - about ten years after graduation.

I just discovered Google Docs this year.

I love the smell of vinyl record albums, dishwashers, and yeah ... photocopiers.

Favourite fruits -- pineapple and blueberries. Because they're the best. Oh raspberries too.



Do you know what to do when your succulents get too tall? (Help me, Flown!)

They're in a full sun window, so I'm not sure what to do. It's pretty funny. They have long stalks and they're tipping over.

Scars -- yes quite a few surgical scars on my pelvis / abdomen from 10+ major surgeries.

I also have little scars from cuts or abrasions that just never heal.

A couple small scars on my left wrist and left thumb, due to being clumsy while using a knife sharpener as a child.

A bad one on the end of my left middle finger, due to an accidental partial amputation of that portion of that finger.

One on my left arm from a skin cancer biopsy many years ago.

One on my right ear, and one on my neck, both from cyst removal surgery as a child.

I have a small mark on my thumb where I electrocuted myself and it burnt a hole.

I have a self-inflicted cigarette burn on the back of my left hand from an experiment with pain tolerance.

I have a scar under my left eye where I had a sty removed as a child.

I have a scar on the inside of my bladder where a cancerous tumor was removed (I get to see it once a year to check it hasn't grown back.)

Otherwise I'm pretty much as I was when I left the shop.

I feel like scars give a person character. I have a few----but really not too many.

Do you hope to be reincarnated as a domestic kitty cat?

I have numerous but tiny scars all over my body. Mostly are generally no bigger than an a quarter inch and usually not any more visible than a faded vaccination scar -- because half of it are actually 5 year old chicken pox scars (I had chicken pox just before I turned 21 that year).

With only two exemptions -- one is just above my left ankle, which is at least two thirds inch long.
The others are near invisible scars on both my knees that probably stretched to almost an inch long. All from childhood.


But sure I would definitely want to reincarnate as a domestic kitty cat.
