I never knew those two could be linked. They seem very different to me. Voodoo involves magic in dolls & mixing potions & animals are sometimes harmed in the process, Catholics do not believe in magic & they generally do not harm animals unless their hunting or eating em

I think Voodoo potions mite could have some scientific backings. Some women use perfume & some guys use cologne to try to attract the opposite sex. Mixing a voodoo potion to try & have someone fall in love mite be fairly similar to the concept of using perfume & cologne

christianity has a history of animal sacrifices too. Read a bible and go through the old testament particularly. It's full of bloody sacrifices.

& the bible actually acknowledges the existence of magic and the arcane. There's references to that in the old testament also. Some in the new testament as well i think.

The thing is that things like Voodoo and Santeria are both basically a belief system that came over from Africa (the Yoruba) with the slaves. In order to keep their faith alive and not have to deal with repercussion, they found similarities in Catholic saints to represent different Lwa or Orishas. For example, Legba is often likened to St. Anthony as often this saint is seen holding a child and Legba is said to have a certain fondness for children and even disguises himself as one. Really, it was clever on their part, methinks... to keep their faith alive that way.

As for magic... the way I see it, it is simply unexplained science. A long time ago, someone put some birch bark in some water and POOF! the headache was gone. Magic. Years later we call the stuff asprin...

Also i'd read that some of the Native Americans in the area had somewhat similar beliefs and thus got along well with the escaped slaves. I believe i read something about there even being a slave/native hybrid of the voodoo beliefs, with a combined set of both Lwa-like deities.

I am curious about that hybrid... if you know where you read that, point me in the direction, would ya? I dig on religions.

But you are very much correct about the Bible and magic. When people scoff at that I first point them to the direction of Moses and Pharaoh with the staff (and Cain and Able with the sacrifice bit) as that is so well known. It is also generally accepted by many that Solomon used different forms of magic. I think that falls more in line with Jewish mysticism than Christianity though. I get the three mixed up.. Judaism, Christianity and Islam. They blend into a weird dysfunctional family to me.

The Bible also goes on in the Old Testament to tell followers of God to avoid those who practice magic. I am trying to remember who that guy was... Ba laam? He was a diviner and a well respected one who was in cahoots with the Midianites to thwart the Israelites, but God intervened and Ba laam could not curse them even though he was supposed to. There are a lot of people like that who the Old Testament said worked magic... though it is generally frowned upon in the bible and those of that faith were encouraged to not get involved with people who did such things. I do not know about the new testament... I never really got into that.
