Lexus or Mercedes why do parents name their children. After cars?

The car manufacturer and automotive pioneer, Mr. Benz, named the model after his wife Mercedes. It was a girls given name before it became a car model.

In highschool I had an aquaintance from another highschool that had a principal with a name that was especially bad for a highschool principal: "Mr. Dickoff".

...Ima Hogg...

I KNOW this one is real. If I remember correctly, her father was an early governor of Texas. Her mansion home in Houston -- Bayou Bend -- is beautiful and open for tours. People have always spread the rumor that she had sisters named things like Ura Hogg and Sheesa Hogg, but it's not true.

Shlomo is a VERY odd name. It must be significant to something or a nickname for something, right. It's just too weird to be a real name.

I wish I knew where my list of oddball names was that I compiled while doing real estate title insurance work. I can't imagine what some people could be thinking to name their child the things they do. They are just ASKING for their child to get made fun of.

A friend of mine was in Family Court a while back for a foster child hearing (my friend was a foster parent). One woman also in the court was actually reprimanded by the judge for naming her daughter Vagina.

We used to have a family in our town whose last name was Outhouse.

Finally, my mother has an odd name of her own. She was named after her Russian grandmother. First name Sonja -- not bad. Middle name Euphemia -- yeesh! We used to get into trouble with her if we told anyone what it was.

I know a Kevin Pinkstaff.

I have no problems with the name Kevin, but "Pinkstaff" sounds like some sort of STD. :?

I have never been a fan of the name "Aubrey". I really don't like how it sounds.

What? No.

It's a Hebrew name that in English is transcribed as 'Solomon', as in 'King Solomon'. It's Suleiman in Arabic, Salomon in Latin. The name is based on the word shalom, 'peace'.

Here in the Netherlands, we actually have a mildly insulting term, 'slome duikelaar', which refers to someone who is slow or boring ('sloom' means 'slow'). Apparently, it can be traced back to a writer/merchant named Abraham Swalff who lived in Amsterdam in the 18th century, and was nicknamed Sjloume (= Shlomo) Duikelaar.

Berry, John Carroll, Woodlawn, ASFA. Four schools, five years. I repeated 10th grade at Woodlawn because I dropped out of John Carroll.

Did you know Melody Musick (speaking of bad names :) ? Her older sister is Machele. They both graduated from Berry. I thought Mr. Snoddy was at ASFA, but then again, I put the "high" in high school.

She was also known for being quite the philanthropist. All the names I have listed are real BTW. I just cannot fathom why people have to give their offspring names that may potentially have a negative impact on finding a career. When I was growing up, I thought Precious and Princess were strange...
Ima Hogg and Tom Sawyer are tame compared to some of the outrageous names Hollywood stars/musicians are naming their children (Moon Unit was stranger than Coco or Apple). Sometimes I can't believe the names of people I personally know, that is until I see their license or yearbook photo (the German student's name I mentioned earlier is so horribly long due to an arguement over whether he should have a Slovene, Nordic or German last name, they ended up using all three - I still don't get why the odd first name, neither did he). I wonder if teachers make fun of students with weird names when amongst themselves.

I went to Berney Points for most of the time, but I went to Berry in 1980. Then I went to Ensley in 1981.

I knew a woman once whose last name was Worm. Very sensibly, she changed it legally to Warm.
