Most of our fellow American cant "get the joke" because few know a certain fact that you need to explain:

A "Berliner" is a kind of pastry the have in Germany. And even at the time JFK made the speech in Berlin with that line German media poked fun at it because in common German parlance it was like saying "I am a French éclair", or "I'm a jelly donut".
