Why are people so crazy about guns?

A guy down the street from me only eats animals he's hunted and fish he's caught himself, he also does his own 4 acre farm for his own food. He's what's called a subsistence farmer, old school. You can say, "well he should get a real job", but he suffers some unspecified mental impairment (not sure what it is, but it's obvious he's not all there) and couldn't hold a 'real' job. For him a working rifle is actually a necessity, and it's not for sport.
