Cute baby harp seals: Exist
Canadians: And I took that personally.

I'm using something British as an avatar to celebrate Victoria Day. It's the least I can do after the avatar that I used yesterday.

In August of 1977, hiking from Skagway, Alaska to Lake Bennett, British Columbia.

The train station at Lake Bennett included a "restaurant" that served a big meal with all the stew you could eat and all the apple pie you could eat. You didn't get individual tables. Most of the tables were people on a cruise who had ridden the train in, but at my table, all of us had hiked in from Skagway and were hungry. Besides the stew, the eight of us (three Americans, one Peruvian, and four Germans) ate something like five pies between us. That was one fantastic meal.

Afterwards, we all caught the train to White Horse. They were doing a shift change at the station in Bennett and so the train ride included a number of workers at the station. The cook was hilarious. He really hated US money because it all looked the same, especially when drunk, and was about as likely to leave a $50 tip as a $1 tip.

I was only 2 for most of 1977. I was playing with Legos, cars and dolls and standing in front of the radio every time a song was on.
