To tell the truth, having heard about Irwin's death for the first time I even didn't know who he was. I recalled vaguely I had watched him few times in TV but it's everything. I didn't know then that he used to be so famous.

Oh yeah...thanks to the Internet, I saw a few pics of a cat getting tortured...I'm not normally one to cry, but just the first three pics alone had me traumatized all day :x

Well I said Owen Hart, if you count wrestling as a sport ;)

I agree with Irwin and Diana. Some of the big fat guy comedians like Chris Farley and John Candy, I dont think have been mentioned. I was too young to remember John Belushi's death, but you mind as well pack it in if you are overweight and funny.
Kurt Cobain wasnt so much as a surprise, but the loss hurt me.

IRL, I lost friends way too early in life. One friend committed suicide and a couple of others in car accidents back in their teens. The worst was my best friend from back then getting shot. The fact that you are never going to see them again is more unsettling to me than their actual death.

Other than the 911 attack, no news announcement has ever shocked me as much as the assassination of John Lennon.

I understand why nutjobs get fixated on politicians and want to shoot them, but John Lennon never harmed a soul and was the biggest proponent of peace and love since Jesus.

I guess I'm still not over that.

I was a bit too young, and wasn't exposed very well to John Candy's death, but I do miss him a whole lot

Speaking of wrestlers, Chris Benoit's murder/suicide really shocked me, especially the events that transpired.

When Richard Harris died I was quite shocked (and didn't believe it at first). I was even more shocked when the news announced Heath Ledger's death.

When Gary Gygax passed away I was shocked, his inventions have played such a huge part in my life, and in the lives of almost everyone I consider a friend.

Sure he had been sick for a long time, but legends don't just go in their sleep... and when they do it is shocking. To me at least.

When I was in college, I was a runner, and met Steve Prefontaine. I was really shocked when he died in an auto accident May 30, 1975.

I watched the movie. It was very entertaining and kinda depressing, simultaneously. :)

My grandmother's death shocked me. I was very close to her.

Famous people whose deaths shocked me were:

Sergei Grinkov, ice skater, 28 years old, of a heart attack

Emil Zatopek, runner, 78. He was fairly old, but not extremely so and was sick for a long time, but he achieved a lot in athletics over his lifetime, and was well loved around the world

Al Oerter and Bob Mathias-Discus thrower and decathlete, respectively.

Norris McWhirter-friend of Roger Bannister. His death greatly saddened Bannister as well. Norris' twin, Ross, was killed by IRA terrorists in 1975. The McWhirter twins co-edited the Guiness Book of World Records. The current version is nothing like the old ones.

Yes, a lot of the ones I chose, with the exception of Grinkov, are pretty old, but I don't use age as the sole measurement of how shocking a death is.
