The story of why I am now the yardstick for whether the rest of the orchestra is playing correctly or not.

At orchestra last night:

Me: *gets a measure ahead*
Other clarinetist on same part *Follows me*

After the piece finishes:

Me: You aren't meant to follow my mistakes.

Other clarinetist: I did the same thing. Besides, aren't you section leader?

Me: Yes.

Other clarinetist: So we're all supposed to follow you even if you're wrong.

Other, other clarinetist: It's like the conductor thing: Rule One: The conductor is always right. Rule 2: If the conductor is always wrong, refer to rule 2.

Me: If I'm playing something from the tonic chord while the rest of the orchestra is on the dominant chord, I'm wrong, ok?

Other, other clarinetist: If Rachel (that's me) is wrong, then Bron (that's the conductor) is probably wrong, because Rachel is never wrong.

Me: So if the whole orchestra and the conductor are doing one thing, and I'm doing another thing, the whole orchestra is wrong and I'm right. Sounds good to me.
