Actually, the more I read the more "innovative" Old Norse sounds compared to English. For example, consider Tuesday. Using the common names for the gods used now, this translates to Tyr's day. Obviously, Tyr doesn't look much like Tues. In Old English, the word for Tyr is Tiw, going back, back, waaay back to the Indo European word of similar form (*dyeu-). How the r got in the Old Norse version I can't imagine.
just consider how quickly language changes just the short time that we (you and me) have existed. in norway, the "KJ/TJ" sound is dissapearing, all of a sudden, within the timespan of a single generation, and being replaced by "SH"
the reason for its demise, is that the young generations claim to not be able to pronounce it. why? nobody knows. the older generations complain, the younger ones complain back, but the change is there to stay
the R is there, so it probably just appeared, and decided to stay

English really is old fashioned as hell. Comparing Wednesday with other versions in use today, the Wednes part preserves more of the consonants which would have been in use in proto Germanic, having both the W and the d still intact from Wodan. If it weren't for mussin up the vowels, its practically the original.
Edit: no wait, not quite. Although we spell it Wednesday, at least in America we say /wɛnzdeɪ/ You win this round!
wodan and odin arent so different either, considering all the potential local pronounciations of the name, ranging from germany to norway to the british isles. woden, oden, odin. in norwegian wednesday is called onsdag, odin's dag, odn's-dag, onsdag.
i love how we still use ancient words.
such as Jul (christmas) coming from the word for wheel, signifying the pre-christian celebration of the turn of the year.
i also found out that RASS (probably cognate to ASS) is an old-norse word, that has changed virtually nothing.
"THE ass" would be RASSEN, the viking rune mentioning the ass, writes it as RASSIN.
the rune itself describes some blacksmith, who apparently got it up the... rassin
(i particularily love the fact that some viking felt the need to CARVE THAT INTO STONE!

so lazy they dont even bother pronouncing words anymore

As has everyone at some point. It sounds to me like this is just palatalization. This occurred in many languages over history. It's why in English we say cheese instead of "keese", and day instead of dag. Or why the Romance languages have the soft g and soft c sounds as well. In Japanese it is quite impermissible to pronounce the sound "ti", and it must instead be said "chi". Some people inexplicably gripe when people in English say mature /mətʃʰu:ɹ/ (muh-choor) rather than /mətu:ɹ/, same principle in action. Food for thought: English "I", German "Ich", Spanish "Yo", and French "Je" all come from PIE *ego.
Although of course English is a total pack rat when it comes to consonants and it won't be losing those sounds any time soon.
