I say chips / crisps most of the time, but lots of people here call crisps chips so I say chips to them.
The exception is McDonald's makes French Fries, not chips.

You are originally from the UK though? You'll know better what crisps mean to British people, versus wherever you are now (was it Canada)?

i once got told off by a McDonalds worker for calling the fries chips, before then i didn't know the difference.
