Traditionally carpenters in the UK place door hinges at approx 6" from the top of a door and 9" from the bottom. This gives the illusion that they are equal distances from the top or bottom of the door.

In the States I believe it is 5" and 10" respectively.

Having nerdily checked this, it is true for the doors at my home, but clearly the carpenters at my work haven't heard of it
