Traditionally carpenters in the UK place door hinges at approx 6" from the top of a door and 9" from the bottom. This gives the illusion that they are equal distances from the top or bottom of the door.

In the States I believe it is 5" and 10" respectively.

Having nerdily checked this, it is true for the doors at my home, but clearly the carpenters at my work haven't heard of it

Roger Bannister reported losing his color vision shortly before the finish of his epic sub four minute mile. He saw everything in black and white. He collapsed into the arms of his friend, Nicholas Stacey. His pulse rate stayed at 150 (three times normal for him) for about four hours after his race.

This really is more than anyone needs to know.

Enzo Ferrari was quite sceptical when it came to automotive innovation. He refused to put anything new on the cars until it had been tested on the race course. Hence, Ferrari isn't listed for any automotive 'firsts' despite the fact they had the first overhead cam engine on a production car after WWII. General Motors didn't accomplish this until 1949, and then only for the Cadillac division.

The oldest living tree is a California bristlecone pine name 'Methuselah'. It is about 4600 years old. The largest tree in the world is a giant sequoia growing in California. It is 84 meters tall and measures 29 meters round the trunk. The fastest growing tree is the eucalyptus. It can grow 10 meters a year.

Unconventional comedienne Whoopi Goldberg became a top film attraction unexpectedly. In fact, she was not the first choice for many of her movies: she replaced Shelley Long in Jumpin' Jack Flash (1986), Bruce Willis in Burglar (1987), and Cher in Fatal Beauty (1988). Originally, Goldberg's lead role in the hit Sister Act (1992) was intended as a film vehicle for Bette Midler.

Humphrey Bogart got excellent reviews for his film roles in the thirties, but he was then typecast as a gangster in a series of crime dramas for Warner Bros. All told, Bogart went to the electric chair 12 times, and was sentenced to over 800 years of hard labor. Jack Warner saw nothing wrong with that; as long as the movies made money. Bogert got Best Actor for "The African Queen."

Two life-threatening brain aneurysms in 1974 terminated Quincy Jones' horn-playing days, but not his musical talents. Jones went on to produce Michael Jackson's "Off the Wall," "Thriller," and "Bad," as well as the ambitious, all-star hit "We Are the World" in 1985. Jones has composed more than 34 film scores and won more than 26 Grammys.
