sad. :( reminds me of what my dad told me about when he was in the army, the barracks had a pet deer that somebody fed, but he got too big and unruly and made a mess of the barracks crapping all over the place and such, so they chased him away but he would come running back with evidence off dog bites on him. somebody eventually made him into dinner.

I bet that would make it hard to pass inspection.

smart deer [the one you referred to]. a few years back I was pedaling my bike up in the woodsy hills surrounding my place, when a bunch of deer jumped out from the brush on either side of the country road I was on, and I could not avoid them- and the next thing I knew I flew over the handlebars and landed in a bloody heap sprawled on the road in front of me with the bike landing atop me then bouncing off into the brush. we are overpopulated with deer over here.

When I was a kid, deer were very unusual in my part of the county. I only remember seeing two as a kid -- I was out driving a tractor one day and early in the evening a doe and fawn walked by about fifty yards away.

We would also have reports of antelope here, but I have never seen any here.

A couple of years ago, there was a small herd of deer that took spent a year or two within a couple miles of the house. We would see them, but they tended to stay at least 100 yards from the highway unless they were going to cross. If they were resting, they stayed about a half mile from the road.

you are fortunate to not have to put up with them crowding you around.

One time when I was a kid, I was sitting by the pond thinking when I heard a rustle beside me. About ten feet to my right was a ferret. At some point I moved slightly and scared him off.

We also have porcupines. I've never seen one in wild, but it is clear that we have them. My dog, Whiskey, has to be the dumbest dog I have ever seen. He's a lovable dog, but definitely not very smart. I've never seen a dog before that didn't learn to avoid porcupines after three or four encounters. Whiskey is up to the mid teens.

The last time he showed up with his face full of quills, I told the vet while he was pulling the quills that I had thought Whiskey had denuded every porcupine in the area, but he must have one one that he had missed. The vet got a good laugh out of that.

too bad he can't be kept in a dog run for his protection from the quilly ones. it is a good thing from your description of your place, that there aren't too many cars passing by.

He pretty much has the run of the community. The nearest neighbors are also the largest farmers and ranchers in the community and one of their dogs usually runs around with him.

It's that time of the year again, where I'm driven off my own carpet and the civilization of cat fleas attempt to take back their kingdom.

I declare WAR!

This new years has been awesome.... From 2003 - til now, I've spent New Years alone... but this year I actually was with a friend. It made the entire experience memorable. I'm pretty happy about it!
