I confess, I grew up during the evolution of guerrilla skating; I remember the days when nobody knew who Tony Hawk was. My first real deck was a Powell & Peralta Lance Mountain with Independent trucks and Rat Bonez wheels (w/ German bearings); I think I was about 13 when I got it. I loved that deck, but it was very primitive compared to what decks eventually evolved to. It's nose was completely flat, the up-curve on the tail was relatively tame, and it had no concave at all. I remember buying the grip paper separately, and cutting it into a very fancy pattern which both showed off the deck's top graphics, and incorporated some of my own artistic touches (ruining a pair of scissors in the process). The deck has intricate and beautiful graphics which, of course, were destroyed almost as soon as I started using it.
I confess that Icarus' post brought back many memories. I grew up a skate rat in the '80s. Tony Hawk, Powell & Peralta, etc., yeah...we knew them, but mainstream society didn't. My board is a Powell & Peralta Sword & Skull with Blue Sword. I have Powell & Peralta Bones Threes 85A 50/50 Black & Blue wheels with Tracker 6-Track Ultra-Light Trucks. I have ribs, a nose guard, tail guard, and rear truck guard, so my board held up pretty good. Note, that was
not in past tense. I still have it and occasionally go out and shred a bit. Unfortunately, roads these days suck and are not smooth in most neighborhoods.
Just a few weeks ago I found an old school Tony Hawk and Caballero Decks for sale. They are bringing back some of the classic designs and deck shapes.
If we ever meet up, we'll have to go shredding somewhere. This was an art project I had to do in grade school.
I used to draw cartoons of skate rat/punk dudes. I also used to design boards. If I ever find any of those drawings, I'll post them.
