Yea, the only reason I was allowed to get one was for college. Actually it was semi-expensive because I got a laptop with an i7 processor and almost 16 inch screen.

Well at least you're going to have one now, that's the important thing really. An i7 processor will last you a long time for what you're going to use it for. 16" screen seems like a good balance of viewable screen size and portability. I'm glad.

It's not too big, depending on what you're comfortable carrying around and how good your eyesight is I guess? 14" wouldn't be too bad but there's nothing wrong with 16" at all. If it's the one you wanted then that's all that matters.

I've had a 17" widescreen for the past four years (well, two of them, Dell replaced the first one after two years because of a mfg defect).
It's great. Doing work, watching movies, surfing the net, doing work...
The only problem comes when I need to use it for work away from my desk. It's really too big to be 'laptop', you need a table to set it on (or maybe just for your legs to be longer, I don't know). It's also a pain in the neck... and back... and arms... to carry it when traveling.
Recently, my husband allowed me to take his netbook while traveling for work, and it was great. I could actually OPEN IT on the plane, which I couldn't do with mine, I'm lucky the times it actually fits under the seat in front of me. I only needed to be able to access email and MS Office, so it was great (mine is bigger and more powerful because I run CAD/BIM apps on it).
Unfortunately, hubby just got a brand new netbook and wouldn't let me take his with me my last trip. ~sniff~ I think that spousal cruelty.
Especially considering the amount of my peers who showed up with iPads.

Like you say, the portability this form factor delivers is of excellent use whilst on the move. I think what puts a lot of people off of purchasing a netbook is the size of the keyboard. Some people don't like a small screen either. Personally I think netbooks are great but people still buy laptops even when they could buy a netbook in it's place so there must be a reason for them. 17" does sound like it's too big. I'd say 15" is probably the upper limit for portability ease, I'm not sure why would you buy a 17" unless you're a gamer or something. Your husband does sound a bit mean not letting you use his. I think you should give him a clip round the ear!

I really need a bigger screen for my work than a netbook, even at home, because I did not want to buy two computers, but, needed something portable enough to do presentations with.
I do not game, but, as mentioned, I do CAD/BIM and I also dabble in programming and data analysis. I use two monitors whenever possible to make things easier. Example: https://picasaweb.google.com/1063194953 ... 8699264834
Any of this would be nearly impossible on a netbook.
Oh, and not to worry
Not only did I give hubby a playful clip for that, I was meeting up with a bunch of our mutual friends and told them my sob storry and they've been razzing him about being so cruel to me. Hopefully next time he will relent (oh, the story sounds even sadder when I say I only have a 32bit computer, and his is 64bit... you really need 64 bit for BIM, but, I'm too cheap to upgrade yet).
