Since about 1908 or so, a "ball" made out of various types of electric lights has been "dropped" from the Times Building (called something else nowadays).

It is dropped slowly, to reflect the fact that people are "counting down" the seconds until the beginning of the New Year.

It's a very beautiful thing. I saw it in person during 1979-1980.
