I think the way people choose for their team is usually:
#1 Sports prowess
#2 Social status
When there's no more people with social status or sports abilities, they pick from the leftovers.
And unless it's all good friends, usually the final leftover is the ultimate social reject of the group and everyone will know to avoid that person.
