It takes around 3000 cows to supply the NFL with enough leather for just one season's worth of footballs.

Proprietors of a multigeneration family business, the Horweens do not take kindly to the notion that slippery footballs are their fault. The Horween Leather Company, at Elston and Ashland Avenues, has been the sole tanner and provider of the leather in National Football League balls since the early 1940s. Almost every leather football you see ? Wilson, Spalding, Nike, Rawlings, Adidas ? began its journey to the field at Horween.

i know nothing of american football, except it's incorrectly named ;) maybe 'easy rugby-with body armour' lol jk

Once an avid marine aquarist myself, I learned an interesting fact( or at least I thought): A freshwater fish is constantly in danger of drowning, and the opposite is true of its counterpart, this being due to "osmosis." So the funny thing is that a saltwater fish is constantly gulping water to stay hydrated because the salinity is lower in its fluids compared to the "outside environment." And the freshwater fish has kidneys are 'in overtime' to remove water so it doesn't drown--salinity is higher 'on the inside' here.

Edit correction for fish juxtaposition.

QI Fact of the Day
Immediately after George W Bush's election victory in November 2004, Canadian immigration authorities experienced a six-fold increase in inquiries from US citizens - from 20,000 to 115,000 a day.
QI Quote of the Day
"I know that the human being and the fish can co-exist peacefully." GEORGE W BUSH

that reminded me of two quotes

Anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.
Douglas Adams

There is a tragic flaw in our precious Constitution, and I don't know what can be done to fix it. This is it: Only nut cases want to be president.

I love this thread (and the show). :D

A fire has been burning underground beneath Centralia, Pennsylvania, since the early 1960's.

I'm not familiar with it (Silent Hill, that is), but apparently the location in Silent Hill is based on this town.

OK, I see you had to hold onto your chair for the last train trivia.

I think most people know this and here's a'nuther:
Diesel locomotives move down the track by electric power. If there was a hard physical connection via a transmission ( as in a car) the tractive force would 'jerk' the wheels loose and slip. So the electric motors gently ease or incline the wheels to move without a hard break in traction, putting a significant amount tractive effort down for steel to steel contact.

(P.S. I edited fish post for a correction.)

Bats are not blind; in fact they can see almost as well as humans. But to fly around and hunt for insects in the dark, they use echolocation.

more animal-based, quite interesting info for everyone, MONKEY especially ;) so she might share some of her knowledge. :)
Gorillas are the strong, silent members of the ape family. They aren't as vocal or flashy with their skills as chimps or bonobos, but they have better memories and often do things independently rather than simply for a reward. Koko, a female gorilla born at San Francisco zoo in 1971, has mastered up to 1,000 words in sign language and seems able to communicate complex emotions such as sadness and even make jokes. She describes herself, touchingly, as "fine animal person gorilla"
