An automatic will hold up as good as a manual, change your fluid,it should be pink, not brown.
If your fluid is brown and stinks you may have clutch fibers in it.It will slip.
The plus on an automatic is it won't jump out of gear when you are parked, the minus is you can't roll them off to start.
I think an automatic tranny will help you go through the 1/4 mile faster.

An automatic will hold up better in most cases. Usually much, much better.

On the other hand, if you have a transmission problem, a standard should be far less costly to repair.

Actually, I know of two that rolled when the shifter was in park. Both were Fords for whatever that's worth.
One was a Ranger that belongs to someone I know and it rolled into another car in a parking lot.
Myself and few others actually witnessed a Mustang do that at work. It rolled backward off of the pavement and into the grass about 15 ft. We knew the guy and the car was unlocked so we looked inside and it was in park. He thought we were f*cking with him when we called him.
I set my parking brake whenever I'm parked on any incline no matter how low. Better to be safe than sorry.

Manual gearboxes kick ass; more power, better mileage, cheaper repairs and a lower price tag for the car. I can't understand why anyone would want an automatic transmission.

It's a bit of a moot point here in the UK - over 90% of cars are manual transmission. Automatics are de facto cars for people with restricted mobility/the elderly, and practically everyone learns to drive in a manual.

I've also owned several old bangers which didn't like starting in cold weather. not being able to 'bump' start them would have been a major ballache, so I'd prefer a manual for that reason alone. I wouldn't slag anyone off for wanting an auto, but they just aren't the default in this country unless you have a medical need.

I don't drive automatic or manual. So I guess I am not one of them.

I agree. But unfortunately what I wanted (Jeep WJ) a manual was offered but only a very few were produced, and those that have one aren't parting with it anytime soon. My next toy is gonna be a M35 Deuce-and-a-half. Drove those when I was in the Army. Used to have a blast on the tank trails. Mainly to keep around for the occasional No'easter, and the inevitable coming apocalypse.

It's the same here.

I learned to drive in a manual. However my aunt gave me her car a few weeks after I got my drivers license which was an automatic. I instantly got hooked by it and have been driving in automatics ever since. It's so much easier and I'm just far more focused on the road because I don't have to think about shifting gears. I'm probably no longer able to drive in manuals, It's been roughly 5 years since I last drove in one.

I suspect in part preference may also vary depending on folk's individual autism related issues - for example, my elder son is significantly dyspraxic and would undoubtedly struggle to incorporate the hand/foot/eye coordination plus attention to his surroundings required to successfully drive a manual car in UK traffic, hence him qualifying for a bus pass. I have no such difficulties, nor does my younger autistic son. Your mileage may vary - a point worth pondering I think.

Sorry for derailing the thread but...I prefer automatics :P. Starting them uphill is way easier than a stick-drive, and living in a city with loads of hills, sort of like San Francisco, that's a big asset.

I know full well about that, being that I live on top of a large hill. My (technically) first vehicle was an old pickup (the first I actually purchased was a small sedan with automatic drive) that was a manual. I guess I'm a puss for preferring automatic transmissions... :|

I think the OP probably meant that men who don't know how to drive manual-transmissions are p*****s. Driving a vehicle with a modern high-tech automatic is obviously better as long as you also know how to drive a stick-shift even if you don't use one regularly.

Well?? Why do men who can drive only automatic cars, like me, get responses like "p****", "Grandma", etc.

C'mon people be more mature.... (I didn't get that response personally but it's pretty common for many men). It's so stupid. Sometime I wish I was a woman. Men are generally expected to achieve more, a high salary job, a good house, be savvy with how to repair everything.... While if a woman is unemployed it's considered "ok" because she has to take care of the children, laundry, cooking etc. I mean I ain't a chauvinist - I advocate the 50-50 method.... but c'mon those conservative "primitive" men are annoying me! dang it XD

They think driving manual cars is manly because probably in your country there are not a lot of cars with manual transmission, so they think the manual transmission is part of a "nostalgic manly past". I'm "sorry" for them but the rest of this planet is still full of manual cars and grandmothers know how to drive them too.

You could perfectly learn to drive a manual car, you just need practice, but personally I don't know why you would lose time doing that if your country is full of automatic cars.

To me, it seems that those men are into status just like the rest of today's society and they see being able to drive a stick as having status.

I love driving a stick, until the parking brake fails on me anyway. No gold star for it yet... :king:

I can drive a stick, but I don't like it.Someone always gets right on my bumper when I'm stopped on a hill.If you leave your hand resting on the shift when you drive it's not good for it.Or that's what my ex said.
.All the big new trucks around here seem to be automatics and these are macho guys.Maybe since this is hilly country the clutch may wear out faster and be a pain to replace,or the pressure plate.I see people hauling cattle in trailers and they all use automatics now.My son's Duramax diesel is an automatic and he works construction.I wouldn't call him a :cat:

Well, I guess I'm past the point of having anything to prove because I'd buy an automatic if could afford another car. Manual was cool for the first 5-7 years, but after 15 it's just annoying. OTOH, it keeps me busy enough so that I don't zone out when I'm driving.

As far as clutches, I luckily (for me, not for passengers or cargo) shift really roughly so that it hardly gets worn at all. There's 190,000 miles on it so far.

And, as far as manliness, how about this: street racers (at least those I saw back in the 80's) used automatics because with a shift kit they shift faster a human. And they also don't miss shifts, overrev the motor and such, and so forth.
