I can understand Bolt action type rifles and other similar types used for lesiure and the like (i would like to try someday) but i do not see the point in suppling full automatic assualt rifles and in some cases Light machine guns WITH ammumntion.
What kind of deer/target requires that amount firepower?
Plenty of hunting applications for low powered, high capacity, quick shooting firearms like the now vilified AR-15; the low recoil from the low powered* round provides easy target acquisition when there's a swarm of little critters in the field. The fast follow up shot can help a little if heaps of them run. As for sport, there's lots of sporting events that use military pattern arms (though not actually ones supplied by the military, as they're generally illegal in most places).
Switzerland seems to be fine with supplying genuine assault rifles to many of its citizens. By the way you hear people talk, they should have all killed each other by now, but their murder rate is within the normal range for countries of similar economic levels.
*Don't let anyone tell you the .223 Remington cartridge is high powered. It's barely adequate for small deer with selected heavier bullets, and it's mainly suited for small game hunting -- there's a picture of a fox on a box of .223 near me (with small game written all over it), with said pictures pointing to what it's used for
