when these babies [RR Carmargue] came out in the 70s I cursed my fate at being too poor to ever afford one.

I had heard people comment on how rolls automobiles ride unexpectedly harshly over bumpy rutted city streets in America, that their suspensions were tuned for the glass-smooth roads of Europe. I wonder how well a rolls would ride on the bumpy country roads where I live.

I always wanted one of these. I just like them. It's a 1958 EdselImage

Back on the real world I love old RWD "brick" Volvos and this is my everyday car, a '95 940. They really don't make em like this anymore. 2.4 six cylinder turbo diesel, it's done 250000 miles. I don't do modern cars, nothing really appeals to me.Image

Thanks! Regarding Rolls-Royces, trust me, our roads in the UK are anything but smooth. I reckon that As the newer Rollers are more performance orientated rather than being the sedate gentleman's carriage they used to be, the suspension has been firmed up to make them handle. This and huge diameter low profile tyres means they are probably just as crashy and hard riding over here, although traditionally European cars do tend to have firmer suspension than American cars. (I've owned a few)

I don't know why anybody would spend all that coin on a luxury car only to have something crashy and hard-riding. my idea of luxury is the magic carpet ride filtering out all the bumps and jolts.

Here is what I consider a vintage Rolls Royce:

That's FABULOUS!!

You know what----maybe other people already know this, but----I'm thinking Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was a ROLLS, cuz if you paint the hood, red, on the car you posted, and put-down the top, it looks EXTREMELY similar to CCBB!

The car used in the movie was a one off special, built around a late '60s Ford Zodiac, I believe. I'm pretty sure it's still around, ina museum now.

Here is my current....

A.) My dream car is a 2014 Tesla Model S. I like it because it is electric, no need for paying for gas or oil changes anymore. It sounds like it could give a person a better amount of independence as not having to depend on gas anymore and fluctuating prices. Plus it goes 0-60 in a little over 3 seconds. Not too bad!! ! :D

Mine is a Tesla Model S as well! I love that it broke the safety test machines :D lol
Tesla said they're working towards making a car that's more affordable, so maybe one of these days I can get one...

I had a 2009 VW GTI Turbo, that was a nice ride. It was a sleeper. I could zip around corners so smoothly... it was bad for me because of that, lol. Had to give it up when I had kids :( My husband had to give up his 1995 Camaro too.

This is what I do want one of these days, when the kids move out, a 1959 Austin-Healey Bugeye Sprite:

My husband pretty much already got his dream car, and it is pretty sweet. 2004 Cadillac XLR, which is a hardtop convertible and looks like a transformer when he puts the top up or down. It has features that most cars these days still don't have. The best way to describe this thing is that it's a concept car that made it to production. The cruise control is automatic to how the rest of traffic is flowing, you just set the follow distance and away you go! It also has cooled seats to go with the heated seats! And it has a holographic HUD... so it's like playing a video game... And it's 11 yrs old. They only made about 15000 of this particular one.
Image
Here's a video that shows at the 1:52 mark the top going down.

This is kinda what his after market Flowmaster exhaust sounds like. The only real difference is that his is 2 barrel, more of a straight pipe than muffler, and doesn't have the option to close the valves.

I don't know why they don't make streamlined cars shaped like this Chrysler LHS nowadays.

Oopsie, it looks like I never addressed question "B" from the O.P. of this thread...

"B.) If you were to buy your next car (one that is reasonably affordable and a great fit for you), what would it be?"

My other half and me currantly have two vehicles, neither one very currant, but both still in near showroom condition...

2003 Buick LeSabre 4 Door sedan
1985 Ford Escort hatchback

We bought both off elderly folks that had to give up driving due to failing abilities, both run like new with low mileage.

We also own a 22' Dodge/Rockwood motorhome we plan to put up for sale this fall. Once that is out of our hands I want to buy a good running van without rear seats (i.e. commercial style with little to no side windows) to turn into something I can camp in overnite up in the mountain casino towns. I figure I should be able to afford something in a late '90s vintage to mid '00s, but it will need to have automatic transmission and preferably power steering along with A/C.

if I had lots more moolah and storage space, I'd get the following rather pedestrian cars-
*'93 chevy base lumina
*'88 or '93 caddy sedan de ville [a pink one, a la "mary kay"]
*2001 Chrysler LHS
*'74 karmann ghia convertible, automatic [a pink one]
*'98 VW new beetle [a pink one]
*2014 Honda CRV lx
*'70 VW squareback
*any most recent model year of VW microbus with automatic
*93 ford windstar lx
*96 mercury sable
Image
and its stablemate, the '96 ford Taurus-
Image
among the more beautiful cars I have seen.

Gotta disagree Blabby, Tauri are gearhead bane as far as I'm concerned unless they have engines from Yamaha...

Aunty, my dad used to drive a '96 Ford Taurus like the red one in your pic, only tan. He had it from 1996 until someone rear-ended him in 2002, I believe. I remember him taking me to Las Vegas in it around 1997, when the Stardust was still standing and operating.
