-That not every forum has the same general social structure. I was surprised when I first joined here to see people refer to the creator of the website by first name and quite frequently may I add. On another forum I am a part of, there is a page detailing the story behind the website (including who created it) but the staff are primarily on equal footing/status. (Not that I’m saying it’s a bad thing that this forum works differently, I know this paragraph might come across this way but that’s not my intention. I’m just fascinated by website structures, and how this one in particular promotes users to view Alex as someone they know, rather than the typically distant approach which is common among forums. This is particularly evidenced by the emails that are sent out signed under Alex’s name rather than merely the forum title).
...I’m an IT geek with an eye for detail and an obsessive mind when it comes to analysing websites. Sorry. I’ll try to keep it to a minimum.
-Also, it has been stated that the best way to not become a moderator on Wrong Planet is to request to be one. However, based on the limited forums I have been a member on, it is common for members to put in a request to be a moderator and have the chance of being accepted. On a forum that I have been a member on since I was sixteen, becoming a moderator is a long process so people that aren’t completely invested in becoming one don’t usually tend to bother. You have to reach several different criteria, fill out two forms, consistently post, and then the existing staff will review your record (considering any strikes or other bad behaviour you may have) before responding (which can take up to three weeks). If you get rejected you have to wait a bit before you can apply again.
-That Sock puppet accounts and seemingly never-ending threads are surprisingly common. As naive as it may come across, I never fully realised just how much this type of thing goes on. However, there was once a scandal on the forum I mentioned above where someone faked their own death and created another account posing as a mourning friend. Staff noticed plot holes in their story (which was a five page thread) and decided to investigate, only to find out that everything was a complete fabrication. They shut down the thread and made a new one detailing their findings.
*Laughs* I remember when I thought a five page long thread full of lengthy responses was long, over here you get threads which have an unbelievable amount of replies. Ones that somehow go from a serious conversation to a discussion on cheese.

To add on to my previous post, I'd also like to comment on a realisation that I have come to during my time here. Not everyone takes the same approach as me. Saying it now it seems obvious to me, but I've never really given it much thought until recently. I can sometimes come across as a bit detached, and ask questions which I believe will be interpreted neutrally when actually there are some emotional implications that I may have missed.
For example, usually if someone asks me "Ugh, why are you such an idiot?" my typical response would be to go into an in-depth response detailing why I am bad in certain areas, and how I could improve. Of course, this isn't what people mean most of the time but it's what I'm used to doing. Either that or I respond "
Wow, I am? I had no idea, for how could an idiot such as myself comprehend her own stupidity? Thank you for enlightening me" or "Who is the bigger idiot, the one who wastes their time talking to one, or the other who is blissfully unaware of their own ignorance?".

Ah, coming up with comebacks at school was always entertaining. People usually get annoyed when they try to insult me because I usually either end up over analysing it, or I turn it against them if I want revenge

.
Sometimes I state a fact or opinion and don't realise that by doing so it makes it come across as though I'm trying to make a point and harshly criticise a particular thing or behaviour, when actually I just expected people to take the same apathetic stance and comment on it/ speculate on why this thing is true or false, because I thought it was interesting. At least I've become less oblivious to this over time due to my experiences.
