How would you describe this generation of18 to 25 year olds?
Back in the 1990s prior to the mobile phone era and internet this age group was what I would call the "whatever" generation into grunge, bohemian lifestyles, nose rings and did the usual stuff 18-25 yr olds do to piss off older people....
otherwise business as usual...
Self-centeredness and Narcissism are two COMPLETELY different things! Many young people are self centered, and you can be self centered and still have empathy.
Narcissists have NO empathy. Just like sociopaths and psychopaths.
Yep, I don't think this generation are any more self-centred than the last. However the compulsion to keep checking your phone makes one a little more self-centred.
The traits associated with narcissism includ vanity, in love with oneself, self-loving, self-admiring, wrapped up in oneself, self-absorbed, self-obsessed, conceited, self-centred, self-regarding, egotistic, egotistical, egoistic, egocentric, egomaniac...
Sounds pretty self-centred to me...
I'm sorry but you clearly do not understand what true narcissism is. My mom was married to one for 9 years who abused the hell out of us and labeling all young people as narcissists just because you don't like the fact that they enjoy taking selfies for social media shows how ignorant you really are, not to mention ageist.
Social media junkies display elevated levels of the personality trait of narcissism which is state condition induced from using social media. Everyone has some level of this trait.
People diagnosed with NPD like your mother's partner (ex?) have chronic and excessive levels of this trait and if you read the diagnosis Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) involves a pattern of self-centered, arrogant thinking
Narcism can be very subtle. I found out the hard way. One is made to feel so loved and wanted. Here is my experience of dating a narcistic girl...
I believe I dated a lady who had issues with narcism. She hated men because as a teenager she was raped. She also had a very wierd Mum. She made me feel as if I was something very special. She was expert in this. She dated me for about six months and then suddenly without telling me or without warning, it was over. We were going to get married. Her grandmother was making her a wedding dress! She seemed to have done the same to many other men. While I was dating her, she kept ignoring texts and phone calls from someone. I found out later that it was her previous lover who wanted to find out if they were still an item! She had been dating him for six months as well.
She was my first girlfriend when I was 36. She was 28. I had been dating her for about 4 and a half months when I turned up at her house (She lived with her parents) and she wasn't there. Her sister (I worked with her sister and her as it was how we met) told me "She is at the solicitors and will be back soon". I was a little puzzled. I said "Solicitors?" She said "Yes. For the devorce". I looked at her sister puzzled and she said "Didn't she tell you she was married?" When she arrived, I obviously wanted to know, and she said they had been dating for six months and were married. her parents and they moved into Wales along with their grandmother, her sister and her sisters husband. (They had two static caravans. One was hers, the other was her sisters). Also she had two brothers who moved with them. She said they had been married for six months when he just left, and went to live back with his dad. (It took some questioning to get that out of her. I was going to end the dating but I had so fallen in love with her. Now when she first had the job I remember her kissing a black skinned man. He must have been her husband. Looking back I feel so sorry for him!
Now About a few weeks before she stopped dating me they had a young man as a lodger (Or so I was told). She had been chatting to him online which involved (In those days) going down to a charity shop which doubled up as an internet cafe. I didn't know much about the internet in those days as not many people were on it. She said she was typing to an old friend she had once dated. I thought nothing of it. We hadn't been dating for pong back then. Maybe a couple of weeks. Well. I remember when I saw him when I visited her, I was introduced to him and I said "Hello" and I had naturally gone to give her a kiss and a hug (She had started me kissing ad hugging and with her it felt natural. It would be hard to do to others). Well, he seemed alarmed somehow. I thought "Why is he concerned?" I didn't twig...
Well. During the time I had been dating her, her mum had asked me to go upstairs to see the new cupboard. I went up and took a look. I said it was nice, and went back down. Another occasion she asked me and she was wearing something different. Politely I assumed there was something different to the cupboard... Nope. Same cupboard. This later happened a third time, only she was in another revealing skimpy fancy sort of underwear type dress. I saw the cupboards and was puzzled why she was asking me upstairs when it was the same cupboard all along! Her husband was a long distance lorry driver.
Now her sisters husband (Who I also worked with) used to say "If you date her you are dating her mother as well". I just thought her mother and her were close. I didn't know what he meant. He had said it several times to me but never elaborated beyond that.
Well, as we were going to get married, she loved vans and lorries. We happened to see a little car type van she fell in love with. It was a year and a half old. I took out a loan to buy it and used my car as par exchange. She would then have the van (Wasn't my type of vehicle) and I was happy to buy a cheap Volvo estate which I much preferred. They didn't cost much in those days as there was a flood of them on the market and they were welk made so lasted... So they were cheap!
The day she saw me and that I had the van (She had also had me take all my annual leave out for the year as she said she wanted us to have a long holiday) was the last day we were an item. She said "She wanted to be alone for a couple of days to think (I assumed it was to make wedding arrangements). I didn't think this was odd. I was a little dissapointed.
Well, I wated about four days. I text. No reply. I tried to phone. No reply. Strange I thought. She lived about an hours drive away. I just text once a day asking what was happening. Nothing. I occasionally saw her brother in law. He wasn't saying much other then she was ok and she wanted time to herself.
Well, after texting her for a few weeks with the same results and maybe two brief replies which didn't say much, I then was a bit more despearte as my annual leave didn't have much time left, so I tried ringing her and texting her. Nothing. I believe her brother in law had said not to visit her but had not indicated it was over. Time went on. About a month and a half later after a gap of trying to get in touch (She and her sister had left the railways by then. Her sisster was pregnant and she had been sacked). I tried again. Nothing. Then her Dad phoned me and started to tell me off. I said "I take it it's over then?" He gasped as if in shock. He didn't know that I didn't know. He said "Yes, its over". And that was that.
[I don't know if it was me that was at fault or her as I don't seem to get hints! (As you can tell with her mother asking me to see the cupboards! Was only a long time after looking back that I twigged what was going on!) So maybe it was me not getting hints, and never had dated before wheich led to the wierd issues!] I became a bit suicidal after that as for about three months I was blaming myself, until one day I was having a shift with a certain driver. The shifts were such that he had been on the other side so we had not seen each other for ages. Now he said that he had been in a restauraunt and seen her with another man and they were very intimate together and it was about a month before it had ended and he knew we were going to get married, but he had not seen me to tell me. Well, all thoughts of suicide left when he said that. I had been blaming myself for any little thing I may have done wrong. Rehearsing the entire time we dated over and over again... It was such a shock to me! Well. A few years on I left the railways. By that time the shifts had got to me and my mind was jumping back and fore... Four hours sleep in one go was normal. I could not sleep when I needed to... Almost committed suicide as a way out but fortunately God arranged a passenger to knock on the door at the very moment I was about to jump.. (I had even cashed up ready so it was not seen that I was stealing railway money!) I had a few days off down Cornwall after that and the Lord confirmed through a miriacle that it was His plan for me to leave the railway. So I did. And there ended a chapter of my life!
Years later I briefly saw her. Was in the car park where I worked. (In a retail store). I am not 100% good with faces... I walked past her thinking "Is it her?" I mentioned it in work, and said "I may habe seen an ex girlfriend". One guy in work said "Did you say her name was ***** (A very unique name)" I said "Yes". He went quiet. He didn't say anything at first. He was dating her and they were arranging to get married. He left the job for a better job. I heard he had got married to her... Was the last I heard of them. I hope they are both doing well. I hope she has changed and can make a go of it... I hope it is a happy ending! I do care for both of them. Maybe as a person I care too much!

Re. Tennis Players
Nick Kyrgios is an absolute jerk! He was unapologetic for hitting Rafael Nadal in the chest yesterday and said nasty things about his Spanish opponent. What a jealous, mean-spirited brat!
Denis Istomin was right about Kyrgios when he said the Australian needed to develop mentally. I think Denis was understating the problem. Kyrgios needs a complete brain transplant.
Another Australian, Bernard Tomic, tanked in a match yet again.
Australia used to have very distinguished runners and tennis players.

Nick and Bernie are having trouble coping with pressure of grand slam tennis. They are still young.
Ash Barty is currently world number one...she's totally handling the fame.
