The researchers identified 399 male syphillis patients, then treated whtm with placebos in order to monitor the progress of the disease. By the end of the study, 128 of the test subjects had died from syphillis or its complications. 40 of the test subjects' wives had been infected, and 19 of their children had been born with congenital syphillis. The project was suspended after its existence was leaked to the press.
