i recently ceased to source the products for my business from a supplier that i had used since 2010, and i settled my account with them, and i was happy to see the back of them.
about 4 weeks later i received an email from them that stated that i still owed them approximately $5,800, but as far as i was concerned, i owed them nothing.
i maintained that :
i always paid my accounts in full for each successive week, and if i had paid an incorrect amount, or missed a week, i would have been immediately advised by the "squawking hawks that kept their eagle eyes on my account" that i had made a mistake or an omission. (i did not use the words in quotes. i used the word "accountants" instead)
they dismissed my response, and they said that according to their accounts, i still owed them $5,800. i asked them to explain how i owed them that amount, and they sent me a printout (! !!) of my entire account history with them. they did not send me a database or spreadsheet that i could quickly get answers from. they sent me a damned printout.
anyway, i considered using an optical code reader to parse the scanned document to turn it into a *.csv file, but considering it was only 98 transactions, i decided that it would be easier to manually enter the figures into a spreadsheet rather than write a series of programs to compile in an "interrogable" (oh dear that is not a word but now it is) way, the printed version of the entire data dump i was sent.
anyway, i simply decided to enter the "invoices to me" components of their printout in one column, and "payments i made" in an adjacent column, and i had a "freeze panes" imposed on the first row that contained the sums of the successive entries in both columns, and also an "owed" column which was the subtraction of the sum of the "paid" column from the sum of the "owed" column, and it turns out that they owe me $3,612 ! !!
it is there in black and "white". it seems to me that they were taking notice of their "running total" column which was not updated correctly on a number of dates that i have highlighted, but without consideration to the "running total", if i sum what i owed, and subtract the sum of what i paid from what i owed according to their own data, then they owe me $3612.
it would have been better for them to let sleeping dogs lie, because now they have roused me, they are obliged to pay me $3612 which i would never have been moved to realize without my resistance to their misplaced greed.
