They used to burn the canefields here before harvest (harvested green now).
It was the most spectacular sight.
And roar.
And heatwave.

I love to observe how different materials burn/melt. When I used to go camping as a kid I took an interest in throwing various (disposable) items into the fire. I remember a plastic drink bottle being one of my favorites.

I'd post a link to Butthead going "Fire! Fire! Fire!", but I'm feeling too lazy.

Fire is very interesting though, late at night staring into a fire pit, watching it dance. chaos

LOL the rats used to run out as it burned.
You can hear the dad say to the kid in the video, "That's not a bandicoot."

WOW - I do that. Aluminium cans, steel, - I always have fires in the backyard - BBQ's and I try to get the fire as hot as I can and put various items in it to see how hot I can get them, see if I can melt them and see what happens to them when I stick them directly on the glowing heat beads.

I once put a Corona glass bottle in a fire (in a metal drum) and the heat was so intense, when I dug it out of the ashes the next day, it had completely melted and flattened out.

I also like to test various metals by heating them up as hot as I can get them and quench them really quickly in ice cold water.

The sudden change in temperature can have some really interesting changes on the metal's properties.

Like tempering carbon steel

Me too.
I burnt all kinds of things.
Plastics were a favourite of mine too.
I'm afraid my dollies became plastic puddles before too long.

We had a combustion stove.
The hot water system was wood fired too.
There was always lots of wood chopping and fire lighting to be done when I was a kid.

You've got to be careful of the fumes produced by certain plastics though. Very toxic.

But there's nothing better than the sight and sound made by burning plastic as the little molten beads of plastic drip from the container down to the ground. You can hear them as they drip off and fall to the ground.

Oooh that's an awesome idea ImAnAspie. Now I want to experiment with transferring items from hot to ice cold! Actually, I do that experiment on my self whenever I come and go from work (it's freezing inside, and hot outside).

And as natural progressions of things often go, now I am thinking about toasted marshmallows! Are S'mores a thing in Australia?

You can temper steel in oil too.

I also like seeing how molten plastic melts onto uneven surfaces and sets

And certain plants. For instance, don't burn poison ivy.

No, but some people do toast marshmallows. We got that from the Americans. I like them.

I wanna go out the back and light a fire and do more testing after talking about this. I love this stuff.

And it's best when the marshmallow is a bit burnt on the outside

It's raining here, so no outdoor fires for me :(
Indoor fires are possible, however.
