Why is it so hard for me to talk about my emotions/discuss emotional things (in person)? Suddenly my voice will break and I back-track to rational mode, or make a joke. What's wrong with me?

Somewhat, though even in written format I tend to hold back or deflect.
When verbalizing, it becomes problematic because something that is difficult to say, will make me feel on the verge of breaking down. I feel uncomfortable being this emotional in front of people.

here is a thought experiment one can try- on the observation that the brain has a limited amount of resources to apply to any task or problem, to tamp down the emotions try to make your expression at least at first as abstract as you can make it- avoid words which in the past excited your emotions and instead use the most clinical terminology you can muster- this will do two things- 1] it will avoid words that have emotional connotations/denotations/associations, and 2] will tax your brain's resources so that you have just enough to get your thoughts out but the emotions are shunted aside due to not enough spare neurons after expressing your complex abstraction out loud or in print. just a thought.
