it has been my experience that using clinical abstract language takes the scare out of it.

here is a thought experiment one can try- on the observation that the brain has a limited amount of resources to apply to any task or problem, to tamp down the emotions try to make your expression at least at first as abstract as you can make it- avoid words which in the past excited your emotions and instead use the most clinical terminology you can muster- this will do two things- 1] it will avoid words that have emotional connotations/denotations/associations, and 2] will tax your brain's resources so that you have just enough to get your thoughts out but the emotions are shunted aside due to not enough spare neurons after expressing your complex abstraction out loud or in print. just a thought.

That's often what I do, and I wonder if it's part of the problem. I become hyper-clinical/rational in my choice of words and detach. In my head I am capable of opening up, but when the moment comes (in real life) it doesn't work as planned. I wonder if it's going to hinder therapy or potential relationships.

Yes, I am. I don't want to lose control, it's not pretty and opens up so many floodgates.

on another tack, what would happen if you imagined the person you were talking to was naked? or wearing a ridiculous outfit? that would IMHO depersonalize it at least a bit, making your cognitive load somewhat easier.

Sleeping only 3 to 4 hours a night does have it's advantages. Far more time for my Special Interests and time to read.

It can also be very boring for long periods of time!

I've always been like this auntblabby. I think I told you, when I was a kid, Mum used to call me the wandering ghost because I'd be up all hours of the night/morning.

Well, hardly ever. I have some nights where I don't sleep at all.

Hm, I don't know. If I was able to get my mind to go there, it could confuse my emotions further. I need to be able to feel very comfortable with someone in order to open up. So I think those things would just alter the nature of my discomfort. But thanks for the thoughts.

I don't think so. Although it's just natural for me, I do wonder what toll it takes on my body.

Margaret Thatcher was the same and I believe Winston Churchill was the same.

I'm weird all round! Alien!

IMHO they had superior genes despite unhealthy lifestyles, their genes protected them and let them get away with burning the candle at both ends.

I treat my body terribly but I'm still going. I've always hated fruit and vegetables and I still never eat them. I never drink water. I'm surprised I've mad it this far.
