I got my first car at age 16 in 1980. It was a 1977 modified Ford Mustang T-top convertible painted yellow. I took exceptional care of the car, and after several years, my best friend, who had had several different cars, made a statement about me someday trading off my Mustang. I said I would never trade it in or get rid of it. He said I would. We sort of made a bet.
A close call---around 1997, my wife and I bought a 1991 Cadillac Fleetwood off of a neighbor. I was so caught up in that car that I agreed to sell the 1977 Mustang to a car collector in town in order to get some extra money for the new purchase. I got the money from him for the Mustang, but the title hadn't been signed over yet to make it official. The car collector is a close friend to my father. The next morning at work, I felt like a ton of bricks hit me on the head saying, "You traded off your Mustang...you said you would never do that." I was sick. I told my parents and my father called the car collecctor, and he agreed to give me my money back. In this whole process, the Mustang never left my garage. But wow, what a close call.
Why the attachment to the Mustang? I have so many memories with that car. I got my driver's license after my driving test in that car. I drove it to high school and then to college. I dated my wife-to-be in that car. When she got runner-up in a contest, I drove her (sitting on top of it) in a parade. Then, in the mid-1980's, I retired the car with around 64,000 miles on it. Today, it has just over 65,000 miles on it.
A few nights ago, I had a nightmare where I had actually sold the car and was trying to get it back---but so far had been unsuccussful. I look back and can't believe that I nearly lost the car.
I think I put a lot of life into that car (and with some other material things in my life). It has always been my friend. It's like the car is a part of me. I have grown older with that car. I first pressed its accelerator at the age of 16, and now I am 45. It has been with me for almost 2/3 of my life. I am glad it is still in the garage.
