Tequila I don't get the point of the beer but I do like the other pic.

It's basically to show what the beer in Estonia looks like.

Photos from day two - another look around Tallinn.

Our hotel has a breakfast buffet option. This is one of the choices on the buffet on the second day we were there. I took one forkful of it and pushed it away - it was pasta in a vile sauce:



All around the port area of Tallinn there are alcohol shops, ready and waiting to serve thirsty Finns buying supplies for the journey home:



I went in the shop and, amongst other bits and pieces, bought a large bottle of Saku Kali. Kali (kvass in Russian) is an ancient traditional low-alcoholic drink popular in Russia plus Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet states in Central Asia. It is made with dark, rye bread. Imagine a very malty, 'bread' like fermented drink. It's a bit like shandy in some ways and not in others. Anyway, this is a mass-market industrial version of the drink - kvass is made both industrially and via street-vendors producing and then selling home grown varieties. This version is 0.5%, although kvass can be anything from 0.05% up to 1.2%.

It's certainly one of a kind and a drink don't forget in a hurry. To me, it tastes unpleasant but also alluring and very malt-like.

Unfortunately, kvass is usually sold in litre-bottles (they were the only ones I could find) so I had to drink as much of it as possible before divesting myself of what I didn't want. I drank about half the bottle as I recall.

We dropped into Hell Hunt, which is a bar in the city centre which is located in an area of Tallinn where there a lot of foreign embassies (the Russian and Swedish ones are on the same street).

Hell Hunt have two core beers that are produced for them by another brewery but seem to major mainly on foreign beers and ciders.

Their own in-house beers are mostly very mediocre at best and taste very sweet, in my opinion. Too sweet. Particularly the 'cider' (actually a perry) - so sickly sweet my mum couldn't finish it.

The service was abrupt - monotone "yes" and "no" answers from the staff. Plus it needs a clean inside. Patio was OK though, and we had lovely weather.

As for the beer prices, they're about right for the city centre - €2.90/50cl (£2.91 a pint) for their two in-house draught beers, €3.20/50cl (£3.21 per pint) for Saku Kuld and €3.55/50cl (£3.56 per pint) for foreign beers on draught. They do comparatively-inexpensive half-litre bottles of the English cider Westons Special Reserve - 8.2%! - for around €4.20 (£3.71, or £4.21 a pint).

Bottles of the Russian beer Baltika, plus all the Estonian bottled beers are priced at €2.90/50cl (£2.91/pint). Most of the bottled English ales are available at €3.55 also, though why you'd want to come to Estonia to drink English beer if you're English yourself I have no idea.

I love this.

A glass of Hell Hunt Tume, their in-house dunkel.

Tasted extremely sweet at the beginning but by the end of the glass the taste in the beer started to shine through a bit. I didn't order another though - the slight complexity in taste at the end didn't change my mind from what I'd experienced in the first 75% of the glass. I think I went to their own brand lager after that, which wasn't any better. 5%.

Walking back towards the more modern city centre area, I was struck by this doll outside a gift shop on Viru Street:



We got on the tram back to the apartment but by this time we were quite hungry and fancied a bit of something to eat, so we stopped at the main tram stop for the city's bus station. Opposite the stop was a pizza restaurant and takeaway so we went in.

My mum ordered a pizza and I ordered this spaghetti bolognese. Came to €4 but was utterly tasteless:



Still, the glass of A. Le Coq Premium (5.2%) lager went down well enough with it though.

Ventured up to the peak district today. This is overlooking the eastern side of the Hope Valley in North Derbyshire on the south western outskirts of Sheffield.
