Thrift stores in Chicago appear to have more interesting donations than other places:

A grenade was found Monday morning among donated clothing at a thrift store in the Hermosa neighborhood on the Northwest Side, but it was later determined to be non-explosive.

A Unique Thrift Store employee was sorting through donated clothing at the business in the 4400 block of West Diversey Avenue when he found the grenade, according to a police spokesman.

The employee notified his manager, who reported the grenade to police, Mirabelli said. The store was evacuated and traffic was cordoned off.

Responding officers contacted the police Bomb and Arson unit, which determined the grenade was “inert” and did not contain any explosive materials, police say.

The "pineapple" grenade, named due to the similar ridges on the surface, was blue with a green top and attached pin.

why does this not suprize me?

The real question is what are they going to charge for the grenade. It would appear to be a practice grenade which are not all that uncommon.

Already have a degausser the recording head look like less than twenty hours on it looks new. The mike is long gone but the shop had a spring mounted one from the twenties or thirties as well. Nice score for 22 bucks.

have you tried any recordings yet, to check for function/sound fidelity?

Sounds as if it was made yesterday except the reel in it was no good, fresh reel perfect condition works great.

What do you guys typically find @ thrift stores? I find old clothing, sports jerseys in particular.

exposure to sunshine and fresh air for a day or two will eliminate a lot of the "used" smell, in my experience.

I have given a ton of stuff to charity thrift shops over the years. I can't stand to buy anything from one, though. Something about the feel and smell of something someone else used. Unless I know the person who had it and they took good care of it, I don't like anything that's second hand.

When I was younger we had days out into them where I could buy a couple of cheap items to add to my collection.. they were the only shop I liked and I loved being taken into them :D Loved collecting stuffed dogs and toy cars from them :) Most of what I owned came from a thrift shop, actually :P

I love charity/thrift stores. I get almost all my clothes there, bar shoes and undies. I've gotten into a habit of buying stuff I can alter or make other stuff from recently. Also books (for reading or altering).

Seattle's Capitol Hill Value Village = 'Just leave me here for three hours and come find me around lunchtime'... :D We simply don't do them like that in the UK.

Not too long ago, I found an Oregon State football jersey for $9; very nice fit. :D

Well, I found a nice 1989 Sony Watchman for $4! Doesn't work that much, since TV went digital in the US in 2009; but a nice find nonetheless!
