the very first taste of marmite actually was straight out of the jar, about a little under a teaspoon. i have hard of the very strong taste that is supposedly stronger than vegemite but i was not expecting this!

SALT SALT SALT!! !

my sister and i likened the smell and taste of both to soy sauce. last night (well early morning), i tried both on toast, two slices of toast, half of each slice had grape jelly and the other halves had marmite and vegemite.:chin: if i ever got overloaded on the salty taste i had the grape jelly end to reach for, plus chicken and some juice.

my stomach hurt quite a bit afterwards...vile stuff for us americans. but i had the australian vegemite today again on toast and it did not taste as strong as i remember.

the marmite is a lot stickier and gooier, easy to spread but stubborn to get off the butter knife.

You're brave Kip, I'll give you that. Did you buy those after Murihiku said they taste kind of like tar? 8O

Could they not just stuff it into plastic sandwich bags and drop hundreds of them on terrorist camps?

Or would that violate international laws regarding biological weapons?

We have tried many other things against terrorism, maybe threatening them with marmite would work. :P

Maybe it's no coincidence that Vegemite and Marmite both sound like the names of plastic explosives. :P

Good on you, Kip, for giving something new a go. :thumleft: Sorry to hear you had a physical reaction to it, though. What did you do with the rest of it?

As for the name, apparently it comes from the French word "marmite" (pronounced "mar-meet"), which are earthenware pots that the product was originally made/sold in (I had to look it up). Vegemite is a derivative name (and product), chosen out of a hat. Why it became popular in any of these countries I don't know. Here in Australia at least, everyone grows up eating it. Most people here love it.

Anyways, it's your turn to try it, Theta. If Kip can survive it, so can you. :P

Challenge accepted! I'll see if I can find some!

Just don't ask me to try the rotten fish stuff we were talking about a little while back. I am in no position to gamble that much with my health.

GO THETA GO!! !

honestly, i sort of like it.... 8O .
i'll probably finish it in time, the containers were quite the bit tinier than i expected, when i saw them on the top shelf above the fruit spreads. i shall keep the empty jars in my room along with countless other strange knick knacks.

mom is threatening to throw both away and keeps badmouthing it.

I'm on you mum's side on this one Kip. But good on you for being brave enough to try it. We shall wait with bated breath for Theta's opinion on the subject.

What would Gordon Ramsey say if you spread some on a cracker, handed it to him, and did not warn him what he was about to eat?

:P

He would have said it was mushy, frozen, bland, and just @#$%ing awful.

I appreciate the guy though. He's over-the-top abrasive for the camera, but funny, and more importantly he's good to people ultimately and helps them grow past their sticking points. I feel like he's a smart guy with a good heart. He actually looks a lot like my dad's brother, and so that may have something to do with it, because I like my uncle a lot and it's a positive association. They're both at least part Scottish, too. :D

I don't have my Marmite yet as I've been horribly busy, but I'm just as anxious to try it and report back. I like strong salty / bitter tastes usually, so I'm actually expecting that I'll like it. 8)
