My favirout Halo alien is the Unggoy aka Grunt. Strange aliens that are known for breeding quickly, maturing quickly and being able to learn certain things quite qucickly, this makes them ideal for building mass of an army and to do certain repetitive tasks. They speak through a series of barks and yelps but it is not uncommon for them to learn a few languages such as being known to pick up human language and useing it to swear. There planet is a cold methane atmosphere which are primarely swamps and pillars of fire are a common ocurence, with I thin it was slightly higher then earth gravity. Because of this they greatly enjoy the heat away from there home planet, but to them oxygen is a poisen, so they wear masks conected to a pack on there back that suplies a mehtane atmosphere. Many of the Grunts that are not total belivers are infact angry at the fact that they are just treated as shields for others like the Sanghieli, and apparently rebeled in something called the Grunt rebelion.

Me too! Although, I'm a bigger fan of the hrossa. (I like the language Lewis invented for those books...I bet there was a lot more to Hlab-Eribol-ef-Cordi, if you were to get the chance to look through his notes.)

Although they're not so much aliens as a new human species, I like the Wraeththu of the trilogy by Storm Constantine. In some sense she's working with the same idea as Ursula le Guin did with her Gethenians in The Left Hand of Darkness - of 'deuter' beings who only take on a role we'd see as 'male' or 'female' in order to beget or bear children - but she's a lot more explicit about how it works.

Take the number of science-fiction writers, and multiply by seven (some create more, some never write of any aliens).

I like Niven's aliens - they make sense to me, and seem a valid product of their evolutionary environments - but some of the alines created by Star Trek novelists are entertaining, even if they seem a bit silly (like Diane Duane's sulamid, who look like "a sheaf of purple tentacles", and who have twelve genders, all of which insist on being referred to in Federation Basic as "she").
