The written Irish language has little correspondence with how it's spoken to an L1 British English speaker. Many, many silent diphthongs and letters pronounced differently to what one would expect. Doesn't change the fact that it looks good and sounds great.

I wish I had been brought up in an Irish-speaking environment. My most recent Irish-born ancestors only used it at school and there's no evidence to suggest it was used at home or in the community from the early 19th century onwards. It used to be on the fringes of a Gaeltacht but this was many years ago now. The Gaeltacht is now only limited to a handful of towns in a different county.
